Following his elimination from the German Darts Grand Prix, Luke Littler has made his feelings known. The 18-year-old Englishman posted a striking message on his Instagram Story after his semi-final defeat to Gian van Veen, expressing his dissatisfaction with playing in Germany.
The message came shortly after his 7-4 loss to Van Veen, who went on to face Michael van Gerwen in an all-Dutch final. Van Gerwen eventually claimed the title with an 8-5 victory. Littler didn’t hold back in his Instagram Story, posting shortly after the defeat: “Shouldn’t of been in Munich but had to play anyway, next one in Germany for me is Dortmund and I am glad to say that.”
The message, accompanied by a photo seemingly taken on his journey home, adds weight to the idea that Littler has grown weary of the German crowd atmosphere.
Littler’s words seem to reflect more than just disappointment in his own performance. For months now, the young world champion has been met with hostile crowds at tournaments in Germany. Boos and jeers have become a regular occurrence during his walk-ons and at key moments in matches.
His remark suggests that he may be reluctant to compete in upcoming European Tour events held in Germany. With four more Euro Tour tournaments scheduled there this year, the English teenage sensation could be set to skip them. The next potential appearance for him in Germany would be at the European Championship in Dortmund at the end of October.
Interestingly, Littler’s post made no mention of the World Cup of Darts, which is also set to take place in Germany (Frankfurt) this year. He is widely expected to represent England at that event alongside world champion Luke Humphries. Whether his discontent with German crowds will keep him from participating in that prestigious team tournament remains to be seen.
