'The kids were there – it’s just not right' - Dutch media under fire for ambushing Van Gerwen at home

Michael van Gerwen made his return to the international darts stage last week after a brief absence due to personal matters. The Dutchman is currently going through a divorce from his wife Daphne – a situation that has not gone unnoticed. The media attention surrounding the three-time World Champion has been intense, and by his own admission, he hasn’t always welcomed the constant spotlight.

Speaking to Sportnieuws.nl, Van Gerwen was candid about his comeback. “Everyone knows it’s been a very turbulent time for me,” said the 35-year-old. “You’ve got to try and make the best of it. You can dwell on the past, but I’ve got to keep moving forward.”

While Van Gerwen appeared upbeat on his return, he admitted that this has been far from an easy period. The interest in his private life has extended beyond what many would consider reasonable – even reaching his front door. Former hockey star Naomi van As revealed on her podcast that Dutch TV show RTL Boulevard recently turned up at Van Gerwen’s home unannounced.

“He’d just picked up his kids from school when they suddenly showed up at his front door,” said Van As. “That feels a bit like something you’d expect in America.” Her co-host Ellen Hoog added: “It’s intense – especially with the children there. Of course, media attention comes with being in the public eye, but this crosses into his personal life. That’s just unpleasant.”

Van As continued: “RTL Boulevard usually gives a heads-up when they’re coming, as far as I know – but apparently not this time.” Hoog added: “It’s tough for him, no matter what. He’s a huge name, and there’s always going to be attention on him.”

Amid all the headlines, however, there has been some positive news for the Dutchman. Van Gerwen looks visibly fitter than before – he’s shed around ten kilograms and recently had his braces removed. The physical transformation hasn’t gone unnoticed by listeners of the podcast.

“We’ve said before that some darts players are… let’s say, slightly on the heavier side,” Hoog said with a smile. Van As replied: “That’s a very polite way of putting it!” Hoog continued: “But it’s true – when you’re physically in a good place, it often helps you mentally too. And that’s what we’re seeing with Van Gerwen.”

Van As agreed: “Being fit means you tire less easily, you sleep better, and you’re sharper mentally. That almost always leads to better performances.”

Van Gerwen made his official return at the US Darts Masters in New York last weekend. While he didn’t go all the way – losing to Gerwyn Price in the second round – he did manage to win his opening match and proved that, despite all the off-stage turbulence, he remains a serious contender at the top level.
