Despite so much pre-tournament hype, the 2025 World Cup of Darts turned out to be a major disappointment for England's dream team of world number one Luke Humphries and world champion Luke Littler.
In their first ever match as a pair, the English were resoundingly beaten by German duo Ricardo Pietreczko and Martin Schindler in the last 16 on Saturday night in Frankfurt. Wayne Mardle was there in person, working on the event for Sky Sports and 'Hawaii 501' analysed just what went wrong for Littler and Humphries.
"It was astonishing. It was outstanding," began Mardle on stage with Sky Sports' presenter Emma Paton. "And what was amazing was the way that Martin and Ricardo went about their business from leg one to the very end."
Whilst things did ultimately fall flat for England, Mardle is quick to praise for the German duo for not letting Littler and Humphries relax. "They never excelled at any moment with, like, an 11 or 12 darter against the throw. But when they had their chances, they took them. They never dropped off for a millisecond," he explained. "Every time England won a leg, it was like it was earned. It really was earned."
So just what did go so wrong for England though? As mentioned, they were widely touted as pre-tournament favourites and many seemed to have already written their names on the trophy. Could all this hype and expectation have actually had a knock on effect on the performances of Humphries and Littler? According to Mardle the answer is yes.
"Luke and Luke, no doubt, were feeling the stresses and strains of being massive favourites and to go on about how good Phil Taylor and Adrian Lewis were, they just made it look easy - that's how difficult World Cup pairings can be," says the ex-pro turned expert analyst. "The pressure got to them at some point, Luke and Luke, and they buckled. Their opponents didn't, and full credit to Martin and Ricardo there."
"Playing for your country is different than playing for yourself. Playing with a teammate is different than playing just by yourself," Mardle added. "The rhythm that you get in is different. Luke Humphries having won it last year with Michael Smith, I thought would give him confidence, knowing what it's all about. But when you're under pressure, you're under pressure. You can't just think: 'I've been here before, it's fine.' You can't do that."
