Kim Huybrechts has admitted his dramatic first-round win at the Flanders Darts Trophy ranks among the very best moments of his career, after edging past Germany’s Lukas Wenig 6–5 in Antwerp on Friday night.
The Antwerp-born star, who came through the Host Nation Qualifier just hours earlier, survived a nail-biting decider to seal his spot in round two, where he will take on former Premier League champion James Wade.
Huybrechts had stormed into a 4–1 lead with clinical finishing, including legs of 14 and 13 darts, only to see Wenig claw his way back to 4–4. Both players then missed crucial chances, before The Hurricane found another gear in the deciding leg, powering through with heavy scoring to clinch victory in front of a passionate home crowd.
But for Huybrechts, it wasn’t just about the win — it was about the emotions that came with it. “I’ve played in the Premier League, the quarter-finals of a World Championship, and the finals of majors, but I’ve never been so nervous as today,” he admitted to the PDC afterwards.
“This is going to be in the top three of my best moments in life," he added in comments collected by Het Nieuwsblad. "To my hometown, I have to say thank you! They helped me.”
The Belgian’s celebrations were matched by the thunderous applause of the Antwerp crowd, who roared him over the line in a match filled with tension and drama. Huybrechts later revealed that the presence of his daughters at ringside added another layer of meaning to the occasion.
“Every time I checked out, I looked into their eyes and they were cheering,” he said. “To share this moment with them makes it even more special.”
With the backing of his home fans and his family in attendance, Huybrechts now turns his attention to Saturday’s clash with Wade — a test that promises to be every bit as tough, but one he will take on full of confidence after a night he’ll never forget.
