The iconic Winter Gardens in Blackpool will once again play host to one of darts’ most prestigious tournaments as the World Matchplay gets underway this Saturday. Often dubbed the "summer World Championship," the World Matchplay stands alongside the World Championship and Premier League Darts as part of the sport’s famed Triple Crown.
Luke Humphries returns to Blackpool as the defending champion, having lifted the title for the first time last year with a thrilling 18–15 victory over Michael van Gerwen in the final. But when it comes to long-term dominance at this event, there is still one name that stands far above the rest.
Phil Taylor – a 16-time World Matchplay champion – holds the record for the most 100+ averages in the tournament’s history with a staggering 62, underlining his unmatched consistency on the Blackpool stage. The next best on the all-time list? Michael van Gerwen, with 20.
Van Gerwen, a three-time winner of the event, has consistently delivered high-level performances at the Matchplay and will look to add a fourth title to his name this year. But to do so, he must first overcome a blockbuster opening-round tie against long-time rival Raymond van Barneveld. Their all-Dutch showdown is one of the standout ties of the first round.
Rounding out the top three in the 100+ averages list is Peter Wright. The 2021 champion, who defeated Dimitri Van den Bergh in that year’s final, has hit fifteen ton-plus averages at the Winter Gardens – a testament to his enduring threat on the Blackpool stage.
Also among the top performers are former champions Gary Anderson (11) and Adrian Lewis (9), as well as consistent Matchplay contenders like James Wade (8), Luke Humphries and Rob Cross (7 each), Dimitri Van den Bergh (6), and both Gerwyn Price and Michael Smith (4 each).
As the 2025 edition begins, the stage is set not only for thrilling matches, but also for more elite-level performances that could shake up this leaderboard.
