Hot dog-eating champion Joey Chestnut will be spending the 4th of July on probation.

The 43-year-old pleaded guilty to misdemeanor battery in April and was sentenced to 180 days of probation, according to US Weekly. Chestnut was charged after getting into a physical altercation with a man at an Indiana bar in March. At the time, he was accused of slapping the man in the face after the two exchanged a handshake.

Cops would speak to Chestnut about the incident. He stated he was “pretty drunk and didn’t remember” the interaction. Footage from the bar painted a different picture. It revealed that Chestnut used his right hand to strike the victim. Upon reviewing the footage, Chestnut told police the slap “looked like a joke.”

However, he later said he must have reacted because he took offense to something the victim said.

Joey Chestnut’s team told US Weekly that the competitive eater regretted his actions and will avoid those situations in the future.

“Joey regrets engaging and the interaction being misinterpreted. He strives to always connect in a fun manner with fans. In this case, some inappropriate things were said that Joey reacted to. He’s committed to avoiding being in those situations going forward,” his team tells Us.

Putting hands on somebody isn’t unusual for Chestnut. He was forced to put a protester in a chokehold in 2022 after they stormed the stage.

Joey Chestnut is a Legend

Despite his recent incident and brush with the law, Joey Chestnut remains an American legend. Chestnut is the most dominant competitive eater in history.

He currently holds 55 world records across various foods and has claimed a record 17 titles at the Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest. Chestnut holds the record for the most Mustard Yellow Belts in history.

Eating 76 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes back in 2021 still remains a world record. That isn’t all his throat can do. He has also eaten 182 wings in 30 minutes, 15.75 pounds of bologna in 8 minutes, and 141 eggs in 8 minutes.

If you put food in front of him, Chestnut can devour it.
