You'd think being kin to the nation's 44th president would be enough to keep the last name "Obama" in your moniker, but Barack and Michelle's daughter, Malia, had other plans. She officially distanced herself from her famous parents when she debuted her short film at the Sundance Film Festival in 2025, going by Malia Ann.

During a previous interview, Michelle said she understood the decision. "I mean, it is very important for my kids to feel like they've earned what they are getting in the world, and they don't want people to assume that they don't work hard, that they're just naturally, just handed things," she said.

While Mamie eventually returned to her birth name, the choice to keep the "Gummer" surname rather than adopting the globally recognized "Streep" has allowed her to build a career that feels entirely her own.

Nicolas Cage was so tired of being treated differently because of his uncle, Francis Ford Coppola, that he ditched the family name entirely as a young actor.
