20 big-name celebrities who have no desire to get married

Drew Barrymore is a self-described "hopeless romantic," and that's led the powerhouse actor into three previous marriages. However, after her last, the Charlie's Angels star decided she was done tying the knot. 

"Never. Never, never, never. I will never get married again!" she told People. "And I also believe people should not say the word 'never,' and I will never, with a capital N-E-V-E-R, never get married."

Before her breakup with NBA coach Ime Udoka, actress Nia Long said she never saw the purpose of marriage. "I’ve never been married," she told Essence. "And there’s a reason for that: I don’t know that I need to say ‘I do’ to prove to you that I love you. But also, what does marriage really [mean]… that you own me now and I own you? I don’t get that part.”

Although Kelly Clarkson had been married before, the American Idol singer revealed she never wanted to say "I do" in the first place. "I’ve never been that person," she told People following her divorce. 

Shakira kept it real during her interview with CBS in 2020. At the time, she was dating footballer Gerard Piqué; however, they broke up a few years later. It seems like it was for the best since the "Hips Don't Lie" singer said marriage "scares the [mess] out of her."

"Without sounding pessimistic, I learned that I don't believe in marriage," Diane Kruger, who divorced her partner, Guillaume Canet, in 2006, told Glamour. "I believe in a commitment that you make in your heart." 

Shonda Rhimes doesn't talk about her personal life much, but in 2015, she told Entertainment Weekly that she realized married life wasn't for her after realizing her relationship had gotten serious. “I was seriously dating somebody, and I was like, 'I don’t want to do this,'” she said. 

"Now if somebody says, ‘Are you looking for that?’ I say, ‘Nope, looking for a boyfriend, not a husband.’ And there’s a freedom to that. There’s no pressure if you’re not looking for it.”

For Mindy Kaling, it wasn't anything in particular that caused her to lean away from marriage. According to her, she's just not that into it. "I don't have a particular urge to get married," she told InStyle.

During an interview with HauteLiving in 2013, Kristin Davis revealed she was in no rush to get married. "I do remember being young and thinking, ‘Why are all these people getting married?’ But I’m an actress – I’ve never exactly been the status quo.”

Melanie Griffith has been linked to several high-profile celebrities, but after marrying (and divorcing) more than a few times, she's realized that life isn't for her. "I really don’t think it’s relevant for anyone anymore,” she told InStyle. "But especially if you’re 60 and you have four kids, and you’re living the life you’ve always wanted. Then why get married?"

Kris Jenner was in two high-profile relationships, with her last being shown for 15-plus seasons on Keeping Up With the Kardashians. Although she's found love again with her longtime boyfriend Corey Gamble, she has no desire to get married again. 

“I don’t have the need to put on a long, white dress and walk down an aisle. I’ve done that,” she said. “I’ve had the big wedding, I’ve had the babies and the kids — six of them, by the way. It’s not like we need to do that again; my body wouldn’t cooperate if I wanted it to.”

This actor, best known for her role in The Big Bang Theory, told Glamour she's done jumping the broom with romantic partners. "I would love to have a long-lasting relationship or a partnership. But I will never get married again. Absolutely not."

For some people, it didn't take anything traumatic to realize they weren't interested in marriage — and that's the case for Jamie Foxx. According to the movie star, he's never seen the "cookie cutter" lifestyle as his type of thing. "The 2.5 children, the wood paneling on the station wagon, and the cottage, I didn't think that was for me," he told E! News. 

Like many others on this list, Goldie Hawn said she didn't need a piece of paper to prove the love she has for her partner is real. "It's not about the marriage. It's about the people, the relationship, and the will to stay together," she told People. 

"On the lives of my children, I've never been lonely. I've never felt alone," the Atomic Blonde actor told Howard Stern. "I never wanted to get married. That's never been something that's important to me." 

We all know Oprah isn't married, and she's been vocal about it in the past, too. In an interview with People, she told the publication why she never married her longtime partner, Stedman Graham. 

“Both he and I now say, ‘If we had married, we would not be together,'” she said. “No question about it — we would not stay married because of what that would have meant to him, and I would have had my own ideas about it.”

Of all of the people on this list, Whoopi Goldberg's reason for not wanting to get married is the funniest. "I can spend as much time with somebody as I want to spend, but I'm not looking to be with somebody forever or live with someone," she told The New York Times. "I don't want somebody in my house." Now that's real.

"I think if one of us really cared, then we would probably do it, but it's not really been anything that either of us have ever really needed," Jane Fallon told Daily Mail about her relationship in 2018. She's been in a relationship with stand-up comic Ricky Gervais since the '80s. 

"I am someone who went through the divorce process," The Blind Side actor told Jada Pinkett Smith. "I don’t need a paper to be a devoted partner, a devoted mother. I don’t need to be told to be ever-present in the hardest of times. I don’t need to be told to whether a storm with a good man.”
