What’s in a film? Hopefully what audiences want! Iconic action adventure films – with heroes on fantastic missions, seemingly insurmountable challenges, and epic themes all define this genre. Exciting and sympathetic protagonists and seemingly lethal antagonists set against the backdrop of cinematic brilliance are in these films which we considered worthy of this iconic action adventure film list. Let’s take a look at some of which have an amazing adventure – or are chock full of action, and have a long lasting influence.

5 Iconic Action Adventure Films That Defined the Genre

Lawrence of Arabia

Panoramic shots, an intriguing storyline, and a deep character study make this film an amazing and brilliant choice. Sweeping views of the desert helped to keep this timeless classic resonating with viewers. Peter O’Toole’s magnificent interpretation of T.E. Lawrence was lauded as one of the best performances of that time. The feat of cinematography made the audience feel like they were part of the movie in this iconic action adventure film.

Raiders of the Lost Ark

This “little” film in the early 80s started it all for Harrison Ford. Cast perfectly as adventurous, but often brooding Indiana Jones, Ford lit up our screens, blending his sense of purpose with his quest for adventure. Often getting himself into trouble, then getting himself out, was what drew audiences to Professor Indy. As a character, he exuded resourcefulness, grit, and determination. This film boasts nonstop action with tons of twists and exciting turns.

Die Hard

Not only did Bruce Willis, who was cast (perfectly) as John McClane, make this movie an instant hit, but Alan Rickman personified evil as Hans Gruber. Set in Los Angeles in fictional high-rise Nakatomi Plaza, this movie kept audiences on the edge of their seats. We watched John climb through air shafts, creatively fashion weapons, and walk through broken glass – barefoot, all to stop Gruber and his depraved minions. This movie certainly took high suspense to new heights!

Total Recall

Out of this world adventure awaits with Arnold Schwarzenegger as our hero, aided by Rachel Ticotin. Schwarzenegger plays a character named Douglas Quaid. Quaid goes to have memories of Mars implanted in his brain, because why not? When something goes wrong during the procedure, he realizes that he really was on Mars and his life on earth was fake. Special effects and creative storytelling make this an iconic action adventure film.

Black Panther

We absolutely cannot leave Ryan Coogler‘s masterpiece, Black Panther off this list. The superhero film blends African traditions, rogue intentions, and a legendary story. Playing a relatable superhero combined effortlessly with valor, Chadwick Boseman’s performance as T’Challa is a stand out among many superhero movies. Black Panther was not only a cultural phenomenon, but set a legendary new standard for Marvel films.

Summing It Up

These five iconic action adventure films are just a few which come to mind when thinking about action-heavy and adventurous movies. Honorable mentions might include Judge Dredd from 2012. Karl Urban stars in this gritty and visceral interpretation of justice in a grim and broken dystopian society.

1984’s Romancing the Stone proved to be a fun iconic action adventure film. Starring Michael Douglas as Jack and Kathleen Turner as Joan, this flick didn’t disappoint. Although it followed a lot of the same formulas as the Indiana Jones franchise, it’s very much a beloved addition to the iconic action adventure film genre.

Another one that’s a hidden treasure is the 2010 movie Inception. Corporate espionage takes on a whole new meaning when it’s performed through dream sharing. In Christopher Nolan‘s visually stunning film, complete landscape changes engulf the screen, giving way to a new method of blending special effects with each scene.

Between iconic action adventure films like these, romcoms, full-on dramas, and the growing fantasy genre, it’s getting harder to decide what to watch! However, if you’re in the mood for intense action, a harrowing adventure, or heroic antics, one of these films may be exactly what you need – with a side of buttered popcorn.
