A24 has shared the one-of-a-kind night vision interview with Friendship writer-director Andrew DeYoung and stars Tim Robinson, Paul Rudd, and Eric Rahill. The film also stars Kate Mara and Jack Dylan Grazer.
Suburban dad Craig falls hard for his charismatic new neighbor, as Craig’s attempts to make an adult male friend threaten to ruin both of their lives.
In a conversation with Interview Magazine, DeYoung explained, "I was digging into what traditional masculinity looks like, which is often corrosive. What’s a new version where guys can have a wider spectrum of emotions and things they enjoy? He sees it and it blows his mind because he’s never seen guys so comfortable. Singing popped into my head as something unexpected and funny while also showing them unified."
He later added, "To laugh a lot is such a gift, whether it’s on TV or whatever Tim does on his show. He’s not trying to say anything, just trying to be funny, and that’s a gift. No one wants to be told what to think; we all have an armor against agendas. We’re desperate to have fun. I still have an agenda in my work, but I try to bury it deep so it informs the emotions. At the end of the day, let’s just have a good time for once."
Robinson expressed to Collider that the project was "out of my comfort zone to do something that somebody else wrote," further commenting, "It's a little bit more stressful for me. I want to do a good job, and I don't know the material as well as they do and everything. It was uncomfortable, but Andy [DeYoung]’s a good friend. I think he's brilliant. I think that he's so talented, and I really wanted to work with him. I love the script, and I was just excited to challenge myself to try to do something that was out of my comfort zone."
Additionally, he talked about working with Rudd, sharing, "I've known him for a while because he hosted SNL when I worked there. I would hang around SNL quite a bit when I was there, so I was familiar with him, and everybody knows he's so funny. But performing with him, it's one of those things where I've seen him since I was a kid watching Clueless and stuff, and so there’s this time where I’m like, 'Oh shit, that's Paul Rudd!' That still happens when you're acting with him."
Friendship will be released in select theaters on May 9 and everywhere on May 23.
