Actors and actresses with famous mothers

A lot of people go into the family business. However, not everybody’s family business is acting. Many actors have followed in the footsteps of their family members, including, in some instances, their mothers. Here are some actors of note whose mothers we’ve seen on the screen over the years.

Melanie Griffith

Melanie Griffith

Griffith has been acting for a long time, most famously in the movie “Working Girl.” Her long career follows in the footsteps of her mother, the actress Tippi Hedren. Hedren is best remembered for her work with Alfred Hitchcock, especially in “The Birds.” The apple didn’t fall far from Griffith’s tree either, as you will see momentarily.

Dakota Johnson

Yes, Johnson is the daughter of Melanie Griffith (and also Don Johnson). It’s a regular Hollywood dynasty. Johnson is a talented actress, although for now she’s best known for the “Fifty Shades” films, which are, shall we say, not critically adored. Hey, we’re sure the paycheck probably made up for it.

Zoey Deutch

Deutch’s career is just taking off. The 25-year-old has been in films like “Dirty Grandpa,” “The Disaster Artist” and “Set It Up,” but has a long way to go to catch up to her mother’s career. Deutch is the daughter of Lea Thompson, best remembered for “Back to the Future” or maybe for romancing "Howard the Duck."

Gwyneth Paltrow

Paltrow has a lengthy career and an Oscar for “Shakespeare in Love.” Before all that, though, the GOOP magnate was just the daughter of Blythe Danner. Danner may not have an Oscar like her daughter, but she does have a Tony and two Emmys. Of course, Paltrow is also in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which her mom can’t say…for now.

Billie Lourd

Ryan Murphy must love Lourd, as he’s cast her in several of his shows. You may also recognize Lourd from her small role in the “Star Wars” trilogy. It makes sense that she’s in those films, given that Lourd is the daughter of the late Carrie Fisher. Fisher, as you may know, was herself the daughter of “Singin' in the Rain” star Debbie Reynolds.

Eva Amurri

Amurri has popped up in a few TV shows, though she hasn’t had a regular role in any of them. She was also in “That’s My Boy,” which is a bad movie, but her casting made sense. Amurri was playing the younger version of a character played by Susan Sarandon, and the resemblance between mother and daughter was quite clear.

Jaden Smith

Jaden has made a couple of films with his movie star dad, Will Smith, but we aren’t here to talk about Jaden’s father. Let’s not forget that his mother is Jada Pinkett Smith, an actress with a career of her own. Also, she was the lead singer of that heavy metal band for a little while. Sure, Jaden won some Razzies for “After Earth,” a film he made with his father, but he’s still at it.

Mamie Gummer

We also want to give a shout out to Grace, Mamie’s sister. Both actresses have had solid careers, and Mamie was once the star of the CW show “Emily Owens, M.D.” That being said, it’s going to be hard for Mamie or Grace to live up to their mother’s acting legacy. That’s what happens when you’re the daughter of Meryl Streep.

Kate Hudson

Hudson has been a bit of a rom-com queen, having starred in movies like “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” and “Bride Wars.” That may be in her genes, given that her mom is Goldie Hawn. Hawn and Hudson both excel at playing bubbly blondes, but both have done some solid dramatic work as well.

Oliver Hudson

You can probably guess who Oliver’s sister is and, thus, his mom. Goldie’s golden boy has been a regular on television for many years. After being in 100 episodes of “Rules of Engagement,” he was then a main character on “Nashville” and “Scream Queens," the latter of which he was also acting alongside Billie Lourd. How great would a Goldie Hawn/Carrie Fisher movie have been?

Wyatt Russell

Guess what? We’ve got a trio of Goldie’s kids in this list! Russell has a different dad than his two half-siblings. Russell’s dad is none other than Hawn’s longtime partner, Kurt Russell. Wyatt actually didn’t start off acting, as he played professional hockey for a while. Now, though, he’s in the family trade. If you haven’t seen the show “Lodge 49,” which he starred in, you should amend that.

Zoe Kravitz

Showbiz people apparently love to name their kids some variation of “Zoe.” We didn’t even get into Zoe Kazan or Zooey Deschanel. With the last name Kravitz, your mind might first go to Zoe’s famous dad, Lenny. However, the “Big Little Lies” star has a famous mother as well. Kravitz is the daughter of Lisa Bonet, of “A Different World” fame. In a fun bit of connection Bonet had a role in the film version of "High Fidelity," and Kravitz starred in the TV adaptation for Hulu.

Rashida Jones

Like Zoe Kravitz, Jones’ dad is a big deal in the music industry. The “Parks and Rec” and “Angie Tribeca” star is the daughter of Quincy Jones but also of the actress Peggy Lipton. Lipton was hip in her own right back in the day, as she was one of the three stars of "The Mod Squad."

Rumer Willis

When she isn’t appearing on “The Masked Singer,” Willis might be doing some acting. That’s right in line with her parents, two of the bigger movie stars of the ‘80s and ‘90s. You can probably guess that Bruce Willis is her dad, but her mom is Demi Moore, the Brat Pack member who was able to carry her career into the ‘90s thanks to films like “A Few Good Men,” and, um, “Striptease.”

Laura Dern

Apparently Hollywood types like to get romantically involved. Who knew? You also know Dern from “Big Little Lies,” or maybe “The Last Jedi,” or perhaps “Jurassic Park.” You know her dad as iconic Hollywood weirdo Bruce Dern. Don’t let these two dynamos overshadow Laura’s mom, though. Diane Ladd has been nominated for three Oscars in her own right.

Mariska Hargitay

Hargitay has been starring on “Law and Order: SVU” for what seems like centuries at this point. We’re pretty sure that when the universe came into existence she was already on TV as Olivia Benson. Unfortunately, Hargitay suffered a tragedy early in her life, as her mother, Jayne Mansfield, an iconic Hollywood blonde, died in a car accident when she was only 34.

Jamie Lee Curtis

Curtis is one of the quintessential scream queens, thanks to her work in movies like “Halloween.” Of course, Curtis has also shown she can be funny in many roles, and apparently she must be good at pitching yogurt, given how long she was doing that. We have to note that her father is Tony Curtis, because he’s one of the biggest movie stars ever, but he never did anything as iconic as Jamie’s mom. Janet Leigh had a few roles, but nothing will ever live up to her death scene in “Psycho.”

Margaret Qualley

Margaret Qualley

Qualley is still relatively new to acting, but she’s had a few notable roles. In addition to appearing in HBO’s “The Leftovers,” you may have seen her as one of the members of the Manson family in Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood…” Her mother is Andie MacDowell, who you probably remember best as Rita in “Groundhog Day.” Now that her daughter is becoming an actor, it kind of feels like history is repeating itself.

Benedict Cumberbatch

You know Benedict Cumberbatch. He played Sherlock Holmes. He plays Doctor Strange. He’s a massive star. Unless you’re British, though, you may not know his mother. Wanda Ventham has been all over British TV and in a few British movies as well. This includes a few different “Doctor Who” episodes, as well as playing Sherlock’s mom alongside Cumberbatch, a role she probably didn’t have trouble getting into.

Miles Robbins

Miles Robbins

Robbins has only really been acting the last few years, but he’s already snagged some solid gigs. He’s appeared in films such as “Blockers” and “Halloween,” and he was also in the “X-Files” reboot. Robbins is the son of Tim Robbins but is also the son of Susan Sarandon. That makes him the half-brother of Eva Amurri.

Toby Stephens

How many actors can say they’ve played a Bond villain. Sure, Stephens did that in “Die Another Day,” probably the least popular Bond movie ever. Well, after that he got to play the patriarch of the Robinson family in Netflix’s “Lost in Space.” His mother has a pretty notable TV role of her own and also a couple of Oscars. Ever heard of Dame Maggie Smith? Of course you have, even if you aren’t a “Downton Abbey” fan.

Jason Schwartzman

Jason Schwartzman

You’ve seen Schwartzman in many a Wes Anderson film, along with several other movies. He comes from a pretty notable showbiz family, so it made sense he ended up in this realm. His mom is Talia Shire, who you know from the “Rocky” and “Godfather” movies. Shire also happens to be the sister of Francis Ford Coppola, which means that Schwartzman is related to Coppola, his daughter Sophia and also Nicolas Cage.

Maya Hawke

Maya Hawke

Hawke was also one of the Manson girls in “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood…” but she made a bigger splash in the third season of “Stranger Things.” Some called that casting almost a bit of nostalgia in and of itself. Hawke is the daughter of a couple of early ‘90s icons, namely, Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman. No wonder Tarantino cast her in his film.
