'Adolescence' breakout star Owen Cooper names Tom Holland as acting inspiration

Owen Cooper left viewers completely amazed by his brilliant debut performance as Jamie in Netflix's Adolescence. All four episodes of the Netflix series were shot in four real-time, one-takes.

Adolescence tells the story of how a family’s world is turned upside down when 13-year-old Jamie Miller (Owen Cooper) is arrested for the murder of a teenage girl who goes to his school. Stephen Graham will play Jamie’s father and ‘appropriate adult’, Eddie Miller. Ashley Walters stars as Detective Inspector Luke Bascombe, and Erin Doherty is Briony Ariston, the clinical psychologist assigned to Jamie’s case.

The now fifteen-year-old actor told i-D that acting wasn’t something he ever wanted to do. However, that all changed when he saw Tom Holland in 2012's The Impossible, which was actually the Spider-Man star's film debut. "He decided he wanted to be just like him. He joined a drama club in Manchester. It was a modest part of his life, just one class a week, until Adolescence came along," the outlet shared. He also revealed that he wants to play the web-slinging hero one day.

Adolescence co-creator and co-writer Stephen Graham explained to GQ, "Owen is a special talent. He reminds me of little Tomo [Thomas Turgoose] in This is England, that ability that he has, if not even more so because he learnt the script, do you know what I mean? He learnt the script beautifully."

Cooper will next be seen in Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights, where he will portray the younger version of Jacob Elordi's Heathcliff. "I was shocked, before acting and stuff, I just thought nobody [on set] would want to speak to me," he explained. “But as soon as I got onto the set of Adolescence, I realized I was surrounded by the right people."

As for Elordi, he is "such a nice guy," according to Cooper, who adds, "My family can say the same as well."
