Romance fans, it’s happening, finally. The Love Hypothesis, yes, that beloved, nerdy, slow-burn, fake-dating rom-com that took over BookTok and made countless readers swoon, is headed to the big screen. Amazon, MGM Studios, and MRC are officially backing the project, and let’s just say, this isn’t your average book-to-film adaptation. It’s shaping up to be a dream come true for longtime fans and a perfect entry point for newcomers.

Lili Reinhart and Tom Bateman Take the Lead

Leading the charge is Riverdale’s Lili Reinhart as Olive Smith, the no-nonsense biology PhD candidate who somehow ends up in a very complicated fake relationship with the famously grumpy Dr. Adam Carlsen, played by Death on the Nile’s Tom Bateman.

And here’s a fun twist: the original story of The Love Hypothesis started as Star Wars fan fiction inspired by Rey and Kylo Ren. So casting Bateman, who’s married to Daisy Ridley in real life, feels like the universe winking at fans. Wild, right?

Familiar Names Behind the Camera of The Love Hypothesis

Claire Scanlon, who nailed the modern rom-com vibe with Set It Up on Netflix, is directing. The script comes from Sarah Rothschild (The Sleepover), and Reinhart is also stepping in as executive producer, alongside Catherine Hagedorn and the author herself, Ali Hazelwood. The film’s being produced by Elizabeth Cantillon through The Cantillon Company.

When and Where Can You Watch It?

We don’t have a release date yet (we know, we’re impatient too), but the plan is to hit theaters first, then stream it on Amazon Prime Video. With a bestselling book, a dreamy cast, and a creative team that knows how to deliver the feels, this one’s bound to make waves on both screens.

From Fanfic to Full Feature

For those who didn’t know, The Love Hypothesis had humble beginnings as a Reylo fanfic before Hazelwood transformed it into a wildly successful debut novel. The book charmed readers with its mix of sharp banter, swoony romance, and a refreshing look at women in STEM.

With Hazelwood directly involved in the film’s production, fans have good reason to believe this adaptation won’t just play it safe, it’s shaping up to be as heartfelt and hilarious as the original.
