Alison Brie and Dave Franco combat unnatural forces in new 'Together' teaser

While Dave Franco and Alison Brie are happily together in real life, Michael Shanks' Together has them playing a couple who are "going through a lot of hardships and [are] not in a great relationship," according to Franco

However, he expressed that it's not just relationship drama, telling TheWrap, "This sounds like a relationship drama, and it is, but it’s also a full-on horror movie. The set pieces are like nothing you’ve seen in a horror movie. It’s very leaning into body horror."

Years into their relationship, Tim and Millie (Dave Franco and Alison Brie) find themselves at a crossroads as they move to the country, abandoning all that is familiar in their lives except each other. With tensions already flaring, a nightmarish encounter with a mysterious, unnatural force threatens to corrupt their lives, their love, and their flesh.

Neon has debuted an official teaser trailer and poster for the film, which also stars Damon Herriman.

The funny thing is that Shanks didn't approach them as a couple, but instead, Franco shared it with his wife: "We bounded over horror movies, he had seen The Rental, [and said] I actually have something else you’d be good for. I read it and loved it. I turned to her immediately and said we need to do this immediately."

He continued to comment that the two have been approached to act in "many different projects together," but that they are very selective. "We don’t want people seeing us on screen too often where they become sick of us. This one felt right, not only was the script incredible, but our characters have been together over a decade, our relationship felt like it could lend itself in a nice way," the actor explained to Deadline.

"The script is so good. Thematically, all the set pieces in the movie are really tied into this exploration of intimacy and codependency. When do the joys of intimacy shift into the fears of codependency? How much do you lose your identity within a relationship? So, it felt like the right piece for us," Brie told Collider. "If there was ever going to be a moment for a meta movie where we were capitalizing on our relationship, this was the project to do it. And at this point, we just know each other so well. We can just have fun together on set. This movie is very physical. The physical demands were, I would say, different from anything that we've worked on before. So to do that together with somebody, we trust each other so much, we know each other so well. It got to be really fun without any of the nervousness that might go into something like that otherwise."

Together will be released in theaters on July 30.
