The world-renowned Monsterverse is expanding with the movie hitting theaters in two years. Godzilla and Kong are banding together once again to prevent a planet-destroying disaster. And this could lead to them facing off against a fiend from outer space. It’s always an insane experience when the two kings hit the big screen. But their team-ups focus more on the big ape than the towering reptile. Could Supernova change that, making Godzilla a true protagonist again instead of a side character?

The Godzilla x Kong Movies

The world-famous kaiju heroes first collided in the 2021 Monsterverse blockbuster, Godzilla x Kong. Godzilla goes on a planet-wide rampage, forcing humanity to turn to Kong for help. Despite butting heads, the two combine their might to combat a mechanical monstrosity. This movie served as a modern remake of the Toho classic from 1962. And put to rest the argument about who would win against whom.

The two titanic figures returned in the direct continuation set three years later. This installment features Kong discovering other giant apes while exploring Hollow Earth. At the same time, an adversary from Godzilla’s past is planning to invade the surface. They also command an ancient kaiju possessing the power to summon the next Ice Age. It’s up to the titular protagonists and their allies to stop it from happening.

New Movie Should Change Focus

The iconic kings of the Monsterverse are returning in 2027 for Godzilla x Kong: Supernova. While the official teaser proposed an exciting time, fans are concerned about a potential issue. Many noticed that the last two films focused more on Kong’s life and adventures. And left Godzilla underutilized, reducing him to a secondary or side character. It’s quite a surprise since he’s listed in the titles first.

For this new movie, devoted followers hope its focus shifts to Godzilla. Or he, at least, receives more screen time to develop his character and story more. Director Adam Wingard hinted he wanted to take the next film in that direction. But since he’s left, there’s no telling what direction Supernova will take.

The chance for a Godzilla-centric Monsterverse remains high despite a change in directors. This speculation stems from the fact that Kong’s story reached its conclusion. At the end of The New Empire, he now leads the giant ape tribe. The King of Monsters, on the other hand, remains alone, so there’s more storytelling potential. Some fans hope the Monsterverse brings in Minilla or Junior to give him company. Either way, we’ll find out once the movie hits theaters in 2027.

Final Thoughts

I’m still excited to see Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, no matter what direction it goes. But I sincerely hope the focus returns to The King of the Monsters. I love Kong, but Godzilla has been underutilized and sitting on the sidelines too long. The legendary king currently feels more like some plot device or underdeveloped sidekick. I’m praying Wingard’s plans live on in the new director, and they rectify this injustice. We can only wait until Supernova hits theaters on March 26, 2027.
