At the 2025 Oscars Ceremony, Andrew Garfield and Goldie Hawn presented the awards for Best Animated short and feature film together. Before reading the nominees, the actor took a minute to share how much his late mother loved Hawn.
There’s a person who gave my mother during her life the most joy, the most comfort and tonight I feel very lucky because I get to thank that person from the bottom of my heart. That person is Goldie Hawn.
Hawn was clearly touched by his words, adding how "lucky" she was to make movies in this "amazing Hollywood" and to be able to make audiences laugh.

Garfield sadly lost his mom back in 2019 and has spoken publicly about his grief, even explaining the emotion with Elmo, expressing how much he misses her and how when he misses her, he feels close to her.
That sadness, it's kind of a gift. It's kind of a lovely thing to feel, in a way, because it means you really loved somebody when you miss them.
Many have praised the actor for being so open and vulnerable about the loss, using his grief as a way to honor his mother and the impact she had on his life.
After the ceremony, Hawn's son, Oliver Hudson, shared his reaction to the moment between Garfield and his mother on his Instagram, saying how beautiful the unexpected moment was. However, he was also quick to point out that his mother hasn't answered his texts, wondering what that means.
I cried, I laughed, I swelled with pride and then became concerned that my mom was now gonna love Andrew Garfield more than me.. I’m still not sure where I stand.
So where does Hudson stand compared to Garfield? Well, the actress did finally answer her son, commenting, "I’m sorry I didn’t answer your texts honey, I was talking to Andrew!!!"
This demonstrates the best part of award season: the unexpected friendships that it gives us. Hopefully, this will not be the last we see of this sweet duo.
