Anna Faris and Regina Hall are returning for the "Scary Movie" reboot

The gang is back together: 'Scary Movie 6' is officially in production. It marks the first entry in the horror-spoof franchise since 2013, and Marlon Wayans has added to the buzz with a single Instagram post.

For those who don’t know the backstory, the 'Scary Movie' franchise began as a true Wayans family project. The first two films were co-written (with about 10 other people) by Marlon and Shawn Wayans, who also starred in both entries. Their older brother, Keenen Ivory Wayans, directed the films, rounding out the family operation. Alongside them, Regina Hall and Anna Faris anchored the cast, with both actresses essentially breaking out thanks to the franchise.

The first 'Scary Movie' was a genuine hit and quickly became a cultural touchstone. After the second film, though, the Wayans brothers stepped away, and the franchise shifted hands. David Zucker, of Zucker, Abrahams and Zucker fame, took over for parts three and four, bringing in faces like Leslie Nielsen and Charlie Sheen. Then, years later, 'Scary Movie 5' dropped out of nowhere. It made little impact, and perhaps more tellingly, it was the first installment without Faris or Hall—two of the series’ most defining stars.

For 'Scary Movie 6,' Marlon and Shawn Wayans are officially back—though Keenen Ivory is sitting this one out. Even bigger news: Anna Faris and Regina Hall appear to be returning as well, at least if Marlon’s Instagram tease is to be believed.

Does that guarantee this sixth entry in a long-running spoof franchise will be any good? Not exactly. Let’s just say skepticism is healthy here. Still, having the core cast and original creative voices back in the mix goes a long way toward ensuring this isn’t another misfire destined to be as forgettable as 'Scary Movie 5.'
