Unexpected franchise "The Accountant" released its second film this weekend. The first movie, a 2016 release, seemed like a sort-of-whatever action flick. Ben Affleck starred as Christian Wolff an accountant with pop culture autism who works laundering money for criminal enterprises.
It got mixed reviews, but the movie made $155.2 million off of a $44 million budget. That would have been sufficient, but that proved to be just the beginning. Much like "Austin Powers," "The Accountant" took off after its theatrical run, becoming huge on streaming, cable television, and even digital and DVD sales and rentals. Also, much like "Austin Powers," the plot makes little sense so you just kind of have to go along for the ride. "Austin Powers" then got a sequel that proved to be a massive hit. It remains to be seen if "The Accountant 2" can do that.
However, we're here to talk about a potential "The Accountant 3," and who may or may not be in it.
Jon Bernthal, who plays Christian's brother Braxton, was in the first movie, and he's the second lead in the sequel. Missing, though, is Anna Kendrick, who played accountant/love interest Dana in the original. Fret not, as all is apparently well between Kendrick and "Accountant" franchise director Gavin O'Connor.
According to O'Connor, he always envisioned "The Accountant" as a three-film arc, with the second one being a buddy action-comedy in the vein of "Midnight Run." Lofty goals, but ambition doesn't cost a dime. Then, the third film would be about Christian finishing a "quest for love." That would, presumably, include Kendrick.
During a joint interview to promote "The Accountant 2," Kendrick's return was mentioned in passing. Affleck jumped in to quip, "We’re hoping she still likes us." Then, O'Connor had a real answer to that, saying, "Actually, Ben, she and I have been texting. She said she’s a hundred percent in if we want."
Unless "The Accountant 2" tanks, there's a good chance we get "The Accountant 3." Clearly, there's also a very-good chance we then also see Kendrick back in the mix.
