Netflix is gearing up for its hit teen drama with the release of My Life with the Walter Boys Season 2 on the platform later this summer. The show follows ambitious New Yorker Jackie Howard (Nikki Rodriguez) as she moves in with her late mother’s best friend (Sarah Rafferty) in the Colorado countryside. As she adjusts to a brand-new lifestyle, she finds herself entangled in a love triangle with her older, moody brother Cole (Noah LaLonde) and the younger, nerdier brother Alex (Ashby Gentry).
In anticipation of the new season and in partnership with Invisalign, Agents of Fandom’s teen drama correspondent Caroline Lee sat down with Ashby Gentry to discuss (and joke about) new beginnings for Alex, new love interests, and what songs are on Alex Walter’s playlist. Check out the full interview below!
Gentry: Welcome back!
AOF: Good to be back! We’ve finally got some footage for My Life with the Walter Boys Season Two. So, so excited. It looks like Alex has grown a lot from Season 1 to Season 2. Can you tell us about that growth? Like, what the glow up’s all about?
Gentry: Whoa, glow up. What are you talking about?
AOF: Personality-wise! That’s what I meant!
Gentry: Yeah, you and everybody else meant that. I think it’s a response to what happened in Season 1. Different people respond in different ways, and sometimes you revert inward. Sometimes, you express yourself outward. Season 1, people forget, is sort of a response season to what happened with Cole and Alex’s first girlfriend, and I think [Alex has] a reversion inward. In Season 2, it’s very much an extroverted response. I think that manifests physically, but also emotionally and interpersonally. He’s like a new man. He’s like a phoenix.
AOF: Oh, my! He’s rising from the ashes.
Gentry: Yeah, he’s definitely grown outside and in.
AOF: Yeah, and that makes me happy to see. I’ll be rooting for him for sure.
AOF: In the brief teaser, I did see that he is walking around the halls of school with Kiley (Mya Lowe), his best friend from Season 1. I saw Jackie’s face. She looked a little jealous. Is Alex going to get wrapped up in a love triangle of his own that has nothing to do with Cole?
Gentry: Alex has a lot of experiences that have nothing to do with Cole in Season 2, though I would push back on you a little bit and say you should rewatch the teaser and make sure that’s Kiley that he’s with, because I don’t know.
AOF: Oh, my God! I watched it the first time, and was like, Is that a new girl? And then I watched it again. I was like, No, that’s Kiley. And then I was like, No, that’s a new girl. I changed the question. Okay, I was right the first time. It’s a new girl.
Gentry: I mean, I don’t know. I don’t know. I can’t confirm or deny, but…there are a lot of new characters this season.
AOF: Can you tell me, kind of, what the relationships are? Any new dynamics that Alex is going to form with these new characters?
Gentry: Well, as I said, I think it’s all a natural response to what happened. If you were 16 and your girlfriend broke your heart, then you had a glow-up, as people say. What would you do? After that, how would you behave? I know what I would do, you know. But yeah, he makes a lot of friends (in My Life With The Walter Boys Season 2). He’s introverted, and everybody needs friends, and so I’m happy for Alex.
AOF: Yeah, go, Alex!
AOF: With the new kind of growth, both socially and emotionally, how is that going to affect Alex’s dynamics with Cole specifically? Because Cole’s always been the Head Honcho!
Gentry: You know, interestingly enough, Cole goes through a simultaneous change. They’re like ships passing in the night. They’re both on their own ride this year. They definitely do come back together at certain points. They both have their own thing going on, and so they don’t necessarily notice each other at first. Ultimately, this story is about both of their relationships with Jackie. Their relationship to each other manifests through that lens. And so that’s really what they’re dealing with. They’re not really concerned about the other person as much.
AOF: Oh, interesting. Are there going to be different dynamics, let’s say, like with Alex and some of the other Walter brothers? Not just Cole, are there gonna be some expanding relationships between different brothers?
Gentry: Yeah, I got to do a lot more scenes with Corey Fogelmanis this year, which was really cool because we’re really good friends in real life. So Alex and Nathan share a room, and Corey and I were roommates in real life which is actually so cool. It was so fun to work with him because he’s such a great actor, and it felt so familiar to me. I think the scenes I have with Corey in My Life With The Walter Boys Season 2 actually kind of pop, in a way that all the other scenes don’t, because we’re just so close. You see that bond a little bit more, which I like, because Cole has a bond with Danny (Connor Stanhope), and I think that adds another layer to his character. And so it’s nice to see Alex interact with other brothers.
AOF: Okay, what would you consider Alex’s theme song to be for Season 2? If you could choose one, or maybe a few songs to describe the journey that he goes on in Season 2, what would it be?
Gentry: Okay. Gosh, so I have my playlist pulled up right now.
AOF: Oh, you have a playlist! I was gonna ask you if you had one, awesome!
Gentry: I would say, okay. So, Season 1 Alex, my theme song for him, which I tried to get in the show, I asked my showrunner (Melanie Halsall), was Georgia by Phoebe Bridgers.
AOF: Oh, that’s a great song.
Gentry: And then Season 2, To Be Alone With You by Sufjan Stevens always makes me think of Alex and Jackie. Alex and Kiley, for me, is Moonsong by Phoebe Bridgers.
AOF: We got a lot of Phoebe Bridgers!
Gentry: A lot of Phoebe Bridgers, and then I listened to a lot of Future for Season 2. I can’t explain it now, but it will make sense when you watch it. The theme song for him that I kept listening to…it was this Spanish guitar song by a composer called Rodrigo. It’s called Aranjuez. It’s this Spanish guitar song that always made me think of Alex in Season 2. So I would just put that on and kind of get into it, and then Season 3 so far my song is, what? Oh, it’s New Person, Same Old Mistakes.
AOF: By Tame Impala. Great song! Have you heard Rihanna‘s cover of it?
Gentry: So it’s actually on my playlist. I don’t have that one. I only have the Rihanna one on (my playlist).
AOF: Oh, really?
Gentry: [The Rihanna] one is more Alex in Season 3. So technically. It’s Same Old Mistakes by Rihanna, but the original song is-
AOF: New Person, Same Old Mistakes by Tame Impala. Well, that’s so interesting!
Gentry: But I also listen to a lot of Spanish guitar. I found that the Spanish guitar is so Alex, like a Western guitar. And then there’s still Future, still Future. Those rodeo guys listen to trap music.
AOF: That’s kind of awesome, I feel like that’s so unexpected.
Gentry: Yeah, I worked with a lot of real-life pro rodeo athletes for Season 2. And they listen to Country, right, as expected. But then they listen to 42 Doug, or weird trap.
AOF: That makes sense.
Gentry: Yeah, TikTok, easy. You know, they listen to that.
AOF: They listen to the edit music. [Have you seen any] Alex edits that you really enjoyed?
Gentry: Yeah, there’s one or two. There’s been a couple that I’ve sent to Noah. There was one to a Drake song that was really good. There will be some that I’ll send to my sister, and I’ll be like, this one’s cool, but I generally like when they’re set to like really good music. I would love a Playboi Carti edit. Yeah, very TikTok. He’s very TikTok edit soundtrack.
AOF: Yeah, no, he totally is. Editors. Get on it. Stand on business! You guys better make the edits!
Gentry: Yeah, exactly. Exactly.
AOF: I’ll be seated for them. But yeah, I guess that was the last question. It was really nice talking to you again!
Gentry: Oh, man!
AOF: Look, really looking forward to My Life with the Walter Boys Season 2!
Gentry: Okay, it’s fun. I really like it. So I can’t wait for you to see it. And I’m excited for Season 3.
AOF: Oh, yeah, Season 3! Well, yeah, seriously, good luck with everything. Thanks so much for your time.
Gentry: Of course, of course. Nice to talk to you again.
AOF: Nice to talk to you again as well
