Have you ever heard of the horror movie, Attack of the Killer Tomatoes? As the title suggests, it features swarms of sentient tomatoes murdering people. And humanity must come together to find a way to end these terrifying veggies. Yes, it’s undoubtedly one of the most obscure and silliest movies ever to exist.
Despite its ridiculous premise, the movie became a cult favorite over the decades. It also jump-started a franchise complete with sequels, an animated series, and a video game. And now it looks like the series is returning with a brand-new installment. There’s even an interesting teaser trailer out to promote this film.
Attack of the Killer Tomatoes involves the titular fruits gaining sentience and attacking humans. The Press Secretary tries to convince everyone that the attacks aren’t an issue. But the President assembles a task force, anyway, led by a man named Dixon. The team spreads to take on the tomatoes, but most of them end up dead. At the same time, Dixon contends with a mysterious person trying to assassinate him.
Dixon eventually finds himself captured by the White House Press Secretary, Jim Richardson. Richardson reveals he has learned to control the tomatoes despite not creating them. And he plans to use them to gain control of their civilization. Dixon manages to get free and then discovers the tomatoes despise a specific current song. The fruits are soon corralled and weakened by the tune before getting squished to death.
Attack of the Killer Tomatoes became a box office success despite apprehensions from critics. Viewers, on the other hand, were entertained by the movie’s campy nature and silliness. Either way, its success led to the creation of numerous sequels. And a new one’s on the way, and it’s bringing an interesting twist.
A teaser trailer for this movie debuted at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. It featured the adolescent prodigy CEO of a company called VegIntel. She’s presenting her newest invention, an Alexa-esque ‘smart tomato’ dubbed the MyTomato. She also explains it will make people’s lives more convenient and protect their private data. Other than that, the preview doesn’t reveal much about the film’s overall premise.
There isn’t a lot of concrete information since the announcement was relatively recent. But it’s said the movie will showcase a battle between nature and AI technology. There’ll also be a wide cast that includes actors like David Koechner and John Astin. Lastly, various studios are overseeing its production, with Anchor Bay Entertainment handling its theatrical release.
I can honestly say that I haven’t seen the original Attack of the Killer Tomatoes. However, I cannot deny that I’m interested in seeing it one day. It’s billed more as a satirical comedy than a horror film with grotesque violence. And I’m somewhat of an enjoyer of movies or series centered around humorous satire.
Of course, I’m neutral about this upcoming fifth Attack of the Killer Tomatoes movie. The teaser doesn’t compel any excitement or determination in me to see the final product. Though I suppose that could change if I watch the first-ever film.
