“Avatar: The Last Airbender” is twenty years old, believe it or not. New York Comic-Con hosted a panel in celebration of the beloved Nickelodeon show’s milestone anniversary. The panel was full of laughs, memories, and excitement about the future of the beloved universe.
The New York Comic-Con panel was hosted by Janet Varney, the voice of Korra in the sequel series, “The Legend of Korra.” The guests included series co-creator Bryan Konietzko, Michaela Jo Murphy, the voice of Toph. Zach Tyler Eisen, the voice of Aang. Dante Basco, the voice of Zuko. Mae Whitman, the voice of Katara, and Jack De Sena, the voice of Sokka.
They discussed how many people rediscovered the show during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Basco talked about how he himself rewatched the show during that time and stated that it was a time for many fans to “get their PH-D in Avatar” and for new fans to discover the show. Whitman talked about Katara, saying it was “rare” during that time to have a character with “such strength in vulnerability and flexibility.” Basco discussed his relationship with the late Mako, the original voice of Uncle Iroh, and Varney stated that “Iroh’s wisdom sums up the soul of the ‘Avatar’ universe.”
One of the panel’s highlights was a series of three cast readings from select episodes of the show, illustrated by Konietzko’s chibi drawings. They held a contest where the winner would read for Suki during the readings. The winner, Cynthia, was dressed in Suki’s Kyoshi warrior garb, and she seemed completely comfortable with the cast. The readings were from “The Serpent’s Pass, “The Western Air Temple,” and the series finale, “Sozin’s Comet: Part 4.”
The cast laughed together during the readings, as if it hadn’t been twenty years since they first recorded those lines. Reliving those iconic episodes undoubtedly filled the audience with the warm, nostalgic fuzzies. It was also a delight to watch the cast having such a great time diving back into their characters.
The panel concluded with Kontsko discussing current and future projects from Avatar Studios, which launched in 2021. The projects included several “Avatar”- themed books and video games, plushies, soundtracks, and a concert tour. However, the most exciting projects are the upcoming animated feature film, “The Legend of Aang, the Last Airbender,” and the upcoming series, “Avatar: Seven Havens.”
“Avatar: The Last Airbender” is one of the greatest fantasy series of all time, and its iconic status shows no signs of fading away. With a new movie and new series on the way, now is the perfect time to immerse yourself into the universe, whether it’s for the first time or the fiftieth time. No matter how old we get, we can always return to that world and imagine ourselves bending the elements.
