‘Baywatch’ Cast Teases ‘Avengers’-Level Action Sequences in Reboot

Baywatch returns to TV in a Fox reboot starring Stephen Amell, Shay Mitchell, Brooks Nader, Noah Beck, plus some original stars. The network announced a January 2027 premiere date for the new series during its upfront presentation on May 11. TV Insider caught up with the Baywatch reboot cast to find out what to expect in this modernization of the sexy 1990s hit. Among the key differences in this new iteration: Avengers-level action sequences for the lifeguards.

The original Baywatch became the most-watched show in the world after it debuted in 1989, airing in more than 200 countries and, at its peak, reaching more than one billion viewers weekly. Its global appeal drove tourism to Southern California and helped define beach culture for generations. Fox’s new Baywatch celebrates the franchise’s enduring legacy, while re-energizing it for today’s global audience. Fox says that adrenaline-fueled rescues, tangled relationships, complicated chemistry, and beachside heroics that defined the original are all in store in the reboot — now with an entirely new cast, contemporary trappings, tensions, and challenges, and a renewed mission to protect Southern California’s shoreline.

The new Baywatch centers on wild-child legacy character Hobie Buchannon (Amell, previously played by Jeremy Jackson), who is the Baywatch Captain, following in the footsteps of his legendary father, Mitch (played by David Hasselhoff in the original series). Hobie’s world is turned upside down when his daughter, Charlie Vale, (Jessica Belkin) shows up on his doorstep eager to carry on the Buchannon family legacy. The series also stars Mitchell as Trina, Hassie Harrison as Nat, Thaddeus LaGrone as Brad, Noah Beck as Luke, and Nader as Selene. In recurring roles, gymnastics Livvy Dunne will make her acting debut as Grace and David Chokachi will reprise his original series character of Cody Madison.

TV Insider spoke with Amell, Belkin, Harrison, and LaGrone on the upfront red carpet to get the lowdown on what’s the same and what’s different in the reboot. Here’s what we learned.

The Baywatch reboot is a “love letter to California”

Dunne told TV Insider that the new Baywatch is “a love letter to California,” and she and her costars all agree that it’s the feel-good show viewers need right now.

“It’s about time something is a lighthearted, fun, happy show. It’s just feel-good,” says Dunne.

“The world needs Baywatch more than ever,” says Harrison, who was previously on Yellowstone. “In a world gone mad, people need to have joy and fun, and it’s sweet and it’s funny. And their father-daughter relationship is so charming. There’s a nostalgia element of Baywatch. We’re leaning into that and modernizing it in a way that’s going to be really fun and cool.”

“The world needs some Baywatch energy,” says Belkin, adding, “If we can inspire a new generation of lifeguards, then I think that we did something right. Amell, her onscreen dad, says to expect humor mixed in with the drama.

“The show is aspirational. The show is fun. The show is funny, almost always intentionally,” Amell says. “We’re all just having a really great time filming it. Hopefully, the timing is good.”

Amell’s own family was influenced by Baywatch. “My daughter’s doing the junior lifeguard program this summer,” he reveals.

Nader says, “This is a show that the world really needs right now. It’s drama, but it’s feel-good. I think everyone will leave watching each episode feeling better than they were before, so I’m excited.”

LaGrone agrees with his costars. He says, “There’s nothing like it right now. We need something that’s fun, that pops, energetic, inspirational, and that’s what this new one is about.”

The Baywatch reboot has bold action sequences

The new series is taking the lifesaving part of lifeguard duty very seriously. They’re highlighting the real-life stakes of this line of work. LaGrone teases “a lot of action” on that front, saying, “We have action scenes that feel like the Avengers. I’m a big Marvel guy, so just be ready.”

“The cameras are upgraded, that’s for sure,” LaGrone says of the differences between the shows. “They shot in 4k, 8k, or something like that. It’s way more action. Way more action. I’d probably say it’s more fun, it’s very sexy. Be ready.”

The Baywatch reboot honors the original, with key changes

Nader says, “There’s a lot of differences. It’s a totally different vibe to the show now, but I think that people will find a lot of similarities between the original and the new one.” She’s also the only person from this group who confirmed who from the original cast she’s spoken with since being cast.

“I’ve spoken to Carmen Electra, and I think she’s incredible and such an icon, and she’s excited for the reboot,” Nader tells us. “We are going to try and pay homage to all of the muses of Baywatch as best we can, and we’re excited.”

LaGrone says the cast has spoken with the original stars, but that he can’t share more details.

She says that her character, Selene, isn’t comparable to any of the original characters. “I can’t even pinpoint who she would be,” Nader says. “She’s her own thing now.”

The relationship between Hobie and his daughter, Charlie, anchors everything.

“Hobie was a wild child in the original Baywatch, so now that he’s evolved, I’m like [his] karma,” Belkin reveals. “Charlie’s a firecracker, and she’s got a bit of Hobie energy.”

“She is,” Amell agrees. “He’s constantly telling her, ‘You can’t do that.’ She’s like, ‘You did it.’ I’m like, ‘Yeah…'”

The stars can’t reveal much about how Charlie’s arrival in Hobie’s life impacts life at work, but Belkin does share, “Coming into an already established lifeguard family, there are definitely some people that are unhappy with the nepo aspect of it.”

“There’s a lot more emotional depth. It’s just a lot more nuanced with the relationships,” she adds.

“I would say, obviously, the biggest difference is there’s not the original, iconic cast,” gymnastics star Dunne says, “but we have a new cast of amazing, talented, gorgeous, hot [people]. That’s probably the biggest difference, but honestly, it’s just as iconic.”
