Behind the pen: 20 of the best songwriters in R&B history

What makes a great song? Naturally, a song needs compelling production and sweet melodies, but the most important (and sometimes most underrated) factor is the lyrics. If an artist can tell a great story in their music, evoke some type of emotion in the listener, or inspire people to make a change, then they might have a song that can stand the test of time. And those are the types of songs that people love and remember the most.

From Babyface to Missy Elliott, here's a list of some of the greatest songwriters to pen hits across the R&B space.
