Beyoncé Donates $1 Million to Colombia Earthquake Relief

Beyoncé is making a personal $1 million donation to organizations providing relief after a magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck Colombia's Chocó region.

Parkwood Entertainment announced the donation Aug. 25, saying the money will be used to provide food and housing supplies to areas hardest hit by the Aug. 10 earthquake.

The company directed people seeking information about relief efforts to Food For The Poor and World Central Kitchen. Parkwood did not specify in its announcement that either organization would directly receive the $1 million donation.

The earthquake caused widespread damage to homes, roads and other infrastructure. As of Aug. 25, Colombia's disaster management agency had recorded 331 deaths and more than 406,000 people affected. The United Nations National Unit for Disaster Risk Management reported 406,273 people affected across 494 municipalities in 16 departments.

The Colombian Geological Service said the magnitude 7.4 earthquake was the largest-magnitude seismic event recorded in Colombia in the 21st century.

Parkwood said the donation is intended to provide immediate assistance to people affected by the disaster.

The earthquake's epicenter was approximately three miles east of San José del Palmar in Chocó and about 150 miles from Bogotá, according to the announcement released by Parkwood. The Colombian Geological Service identifies San José del Palmar as the earthquake's epicenter.
