Bill Murray shares 'Saturday Night Live' stories about "good friend" Bruce Willis

While promoting The Friend with his co-star Naomi Watts, Bill Murray appeared on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen and opened up about his friendship with Bruce Willis.

"Moonrise Kingdom was a really beautiful, lovely film, and I got to work with and have a wonderful time with Bruce Willis, [who] we should remember today, he just had a birthday," he said. "Bruce Willis is a good guy, a good f*cking guy, and he was a good friend."

Willis celebrated his 70th birthday on March 19. In 2023, it was confirmed by his family that he was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia after stepping away from acting the previous year. His daughter, Rumer Willis, recently shared on her Instagram Stories, "He's doing great, thank you for asking."

Moonrise Kingdom director Wes Anderson discussed working with Murray and Willis in a 2012 interview with The Hollywood Reporter: "I had wanted to have Bill Murray and Fran McDormand together. That was something I had very early on. Why Bill agreed to do it, I don’t know. But I always have such a good time with him, and I’ve always loved what he did for my movies. I’m just lucky enough that so far, he doesn’t pass on them," he expressed. "As for Bruce Willis, his character is not what you’d normally associate with him, but he is a policeman, so you just know he’s going to be an authentic policeman. It seemed like he might kind of ground the whole thing."

Murray also recalled how Willis was a page at NBC when he was on Saturday Night Live, "This sounds like insane sh*t, but his job was to come and go to the dressing rooms and refill the M&Ms and pretzels kind of thing in the actors' rooms." Willis eventually hosted Saturday Night Live twice, in 1989 and 2013. As for Murray, he joined SNL in the second season and was a cast member from 1977 to 1980.

"I remember when I met him after he was already a successful guy, he said, 'You and Gilda [Radner] were nice to me,'" the actor explained. "I always thought, 'Okay, I'm good with this guy.' But he was a good guy."

The Friend will be released nationwide on April 4.
