'Bob's Burger' star H. Jon Benjamin admits he's slowly become his character in real-life

Many FOX shows have come and gone, but a few animated shows have really had legs. "The Simpsons," obviously, as well as "Family Guy," even if it was briefly canceled. "Bob's Burgers" is now in that rarified pantheon. The family comedy debuted in 2011 and featured H. Jon Benjamin as the voice of of Bob Belcher, the proverbial patriarch as well as the proprietor of the family's burger restaurant. Benjamin recently reflected on his many years voicing Bob, and how similar he is to his most-famous character.

Benjamin had an unconventional career path. He was a standup in Boston when the comedian Jonathan Katz was creating his cult classic cartoon "Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist." The low-budget, loose-feeling comedy show needed voice actors, and Benjamin auditioned. He was cast as Dr. Katz's son, and he didn't even have to leave Boston to begin his voice acting career. "Bob's Burgers" creator Loren Bouchard was an editor on "Dr. Katz," which paved the way for Bouchard to cast Benjamin as Bob.

Even though the "Bob's Burgers" cast live in different cities, they record together as much as they can. "It gives it a more authentic feel," Benjamin said. While it's not as loose as "Dr. Katz," Benjamin presumed roughly 10-to-15 percent of the dialogue in a given episode is improvised.

Benjamin did not envision himself playing Bob for this long at first. "Whenever you start doing a television show, you feel like it’s gonna get canceled after a season," he said. Time has also blurred the lines between Benjamin and Belcher. "I didn’t sound like this at all 15 years ago. Now I talk like Bob," he said, before quipping, "I’ve become him."

Well, Dan Castellaneta has been voicing Homer Simpson for over 30 years. Benjamin still has a ways to go to catch him.
