The complete revamping of the CBS schedule has claimed one more show, this one a program with some real name cache at that. Joining a couple of "FBI" spinoffs and television's Damon Wayanses-heavy show "Poppa's House," CBS has decided to cancel "The Equalizer."
"The Equalizer" had more name cache than most programs on TV. In addition to being a reimagining of a 1980s show that also inspired a popular, extant movie series starring Denzel Washington, the show starred Queen Latifah. While here days as a movie star are in the past, she's still a sizable star to get for your drama procedural if you're CBS. The network also threw plenty toward "The Equalizer," even using it as a Super Bowl leadout show. And yet, things have reached their conclusion.
Or, that is, they will soon. The fifth season of "The Equalizer" ends on Sunday, May 4. That was supposed to use be the season finale, but it is now the series finale. That's kind of a bummer for the "Equalizer" crew. Comedy "The Neighborhood" got the chance to get a head's up on its demise, allowing the show to bring things in for a landing. Not so much for Latifah and company.
Evidently, ratings for "The Equalizer" dropped off when the network moved the show to a later time slot on Sundays. That doesn't do anything to diminish CBS' reputation as the network for senior citizens.
Come next TV season, CBS is going to look a lot different.
