Fittingly, on the first major weekend of college football season, Hulu released the trailer for 'Chad Powers.' Whether it becomes the best TV series ever based on a comedy bit starring Eli Manning remains to be seen. First, here’s the trailer:
Glen Powell, who also stars in 'The Running Man' later this year, plays a former college player who sabotaged his football career and adopts the alter ego Chad Powers in hopes of a second chance. Powell, a football fan himself, has shown he can handle athletic roles in 'Everybody Wants Some!!' and characters juggling different personas in 'Hit Man.'
Though based on an attempted viral video stunt by former NFL quarterback Eli Manning, the series is not a throwaway project. It was co-created by Manning and Michael Waldron, the writer and producer behind 'Loki,' 'Heels' and 'Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.' The cast also features Steve Zahn and Toby Huss.
In terms of quality, the 'Chad Powers' trailer looks promising. The series has a 'Mrs. Doubtfire'–meets–football vibe, though Robin Williams set a high bar. Powell is a capable actor, but his strengths are different. It might have made for a breezy summer binge, though football and summer don’t always mix. 'Chad Powers' premieres on Hulu Sept. 30.
