Chance the Rapper has returned with the announcement of his new project, Star Line. On the heels of his 2019 release, The Big Day, the album is highly anticipated. Described as a reflective project blending hip-hop and soul, the album will be released on August 15th.
With its eclectic sound, Star Line will reflect the Chicago native’s global journey, spiritually, physically, and artistically. Created with longtime producer DexLvL, the experimental album has been in the works for the past several years and shaped by travels to Jamaica, Ghana, and multiple art fairs around the world.
The album’s lead single, “Tree,” featuring Smino and Lil Wayne, functions as both a personal tribute and a liberation anthem. Built around a melodic reinterpretation of India. Arie’s 2001 hit “Video” the song, shows Chance reflecting on the divine strength of his mother and the inequities in agricultural industries.
The song also shows Chance blending vulnerability with defiance, as he reclaims cannabis as a symbol of economic resistance, peace, and healing. The album’s reflective second single, “Space and Time,” premiered on the Season Finale of The Voice.
With its sentimental meaning, Star Line is heavily inspired by Marcus Garvey’s Black Star Line, which was an initiative in the early 1900s to bring all black Americans back to settle in Africa.
This thought-provoking concept was derived from Chance’s fruitful experience in Ghana. Since 2022, the album has been the subject of various listening events and has generated significant anticipation among fans. Star Line can be preordered the CD and digital album at chancestuff.com. The website also allows fans to purchase exclusive Star Line merchandise. Additionally, the album will be available on multiple streaming platforms.
