When we first got the details on "Roofman," we thought it had the chance to be an Oscar play. That was based on the plot, the cast, and the director Derek Cianfrance. Now we've seen the first trailer for "Roofman" and, well, we're trying to parse just what it is.
So...yeah. Maybe we should have figured that the movie about a real-life criminal who stole from businesses after breaking into them through the roof and then hid out living in the walls of a Toys "R" Us would be weird. Trying to parse the tone from the trailer, though, feels tough. Even with Channing Tatum and Kirsten Dunst starring, and even with the director of "Blue Valentine" directing, this definitely doesn't seem like an Oscar play now, and doesn't seem like it was ever intended to be.
Will "Roofman" be good. Well, it should at least be interesting. Hopefully it will be interesting, and also good. The tone seems inconsistent, but that could be trying to parse it in a trailer. Maybe this will be a film that, years from now, people will be saying, "Remember when Channing Tatum played the guy who hid out in a Toys "R" Us?" and it will be a cultural curio. We'll be curious to see another trailer, if one arrives, before "Roofman" hits theaters on October 10.
