Chris Hemsworth laments 'unhealthy' body standards required for Thor

Chris Hemsworth has embodied Thor since the superhero's eponymous 2011 blockbuster, but the 37-year-old Australian actor wasn't shy to unveil the underbelly to his Marvel onscreen success.

"There's an aesthetic that the role requires," Hemsworth told The Telegraph (h/t Business Insider). "Bodybuilding is seen as vanity, whereas if I put on a bunch of unhealthy weight, or got unhealthily skinny for a role, I'd probably be called a serious actor."

Hemsworth added: "For years I probably overtrained. People who do muscle-building often don't realize it's a sport that shouldn't be seven days a week, two hours a day. I was doing that in the previous Thors, and was coming up sorer, with less energy."

The interview wasn't all negative, though. He also called being Thor "incredibly rewarding" once all is said and done, and he let it slip that he considers himself to be "probably the fittest and strongest I've been before all the Thors."

Hemsworth last appeared as Thor in 2019's Avengers: Endgame, but Thor will be back (and apparently better than ever) in Thor: Love and Thunder, which the hammer-wielding star dished on last month, May 6, 2022.
