Chris Pine to star in new movie "Nowhere Fast" from "Fargo" showrunner

Chris Pine has already fronted a successful film trilogy by playing Captain Kirk in the "Star Trek" reboot and then had a key supporting role in the massive "Wonder Woman." He was also in the "Wonder Woman" sequel that technically exists! For his next project, though, Pine is starring in a smaller story, a crime thriller called "Nowhere Fast."

While Pine's star cache is at the forefront of "Nowhere Fast," you may be familiar with the writer and director of the movie as well. That would be Noah Hawley, who has been running "Fargo" in FX for several seasons now.

This is, frankly, a cause for pause when it comes to getting too excited for "Nowhere Fast," as "Fargo" is uneven in terms of quality, and that is perhaps being charitable. The low points of "Fargo" arise from pretentiousness and ill-conceived attempts at intellectual musings, so if "Nowhere Fast" is a bare-bones crime thriller, Hawley's worst instincts may not manifest themselves.

According to Variety, the film is about "a small-town criminal who inadvertently kills the nephew of his boss." As a crime thriller set in Texas, the acclaimed "Hell or High Water" may be the first movie that pops into minds. If "Nowhere Fast" can be as good as that film, we'll take that happily.

Pine has been in an interesting space professionally. He was a delight in "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves," but that movie was a box-office disappointment that has found an audience through word of mouth since it hit streaming. He was in the risible "Wish" and the toxic "Don't Worry, Darling," and he also used his celebrity to make "Poolman." A passion project, Pine didn't just star in "Poolman," he also co-wrote it and directed it. We heard Pine talk about the film in interviews and his passion was admirable. The final product was received with some active derision from critics.

So yeah, Pine could use a win. While "Nowhere Fast" doesn't appear to be a blockbuster swing, if it finds critical success it would be to Pine's benefit. Also, to Hawley's benefit, who to date has only directed one movie, 2019's "Lucy in the Sky."
