20 classic TV series that deserve a reboot

Not every piece of modern media should be a reboot, but some pieces are worth starting up again. These 20 old TV series would make great reboots.

1 of 20

Gunsmoke

Gunsmoke
Gunsmoke CBS Productions

The original series still airs for faithful fans of Gunsmoke, but a reboot would be welcome to newer audiences. There have been some good Westerns in recent years, but nothing quite compares to the legendary series that is Gunsmoke

Dennis the Menace

Dennis the Menace
Dennis the Menace Dariell Productions

Every generation of kids deserves a Dennis the Menace. It’s heartwarming and funny, and every kid can relate to or admire a charming child that manages to get away with just about everything.

The Flintstones

The Flintstones
The Flintstones Hanna-Barbera Productions

The original series is still great and the live-action movies were a lot of fun, but The Flintstones is like Scooby-Doo, a timeless animated classic that can entertain audiences in any generation. A reboot of this show would be welcome.

The Jetsons

The Jetsons
The Jetsons Hanna-Barbera Productions

We’re nearing the time in history that The Jetsons was set in (maybe), but we’re nowhere near living in the type of society the show predicted (aside from a few accuracies). We need a reboot of the series to exist even further in the future.

Bewitched

Bewitched
Bewitched Screen Gems

The premise of Bewitched is timeless, and it would be a lot of fun to explore how characters would use magic powers to deal with issues in today’s world. The show would make for a great reboot.

Gilligan’s Island

Gilligan’s Island
Gilligan’s Island Gladasya Productions

An argument could be made that Lost was a dramatic reboot of Gilligan’s Island. Unfortunately, though, that’s as close as we’ve come to recapturing the magic of that series. It’s an iconic show that needs to be retooled for modern viewers.

I Dream of Jeannie

I Dream of Jeannie
I Dream of Jeannie Sidney Sheldon Productions

There isn’t enough media in today’s world that concerns genies, and that needs to change. And I Dream of Jeannie reboot would solve that problem, and it would be a great series to give some modern touches to.

The Mary Tyler Moore Show

The Mary Tyler Moore Show
The Mary Tyler Moore Show MTM Enterprises

Mary Tyler Moore was a singular talent and certainly made her titular series what it was, but the concept of a working girl taking on life in the big city can work in any time period. Placing a relative of Moore’s character in a new city would be a fun way to reboot The Mary Tyler Moore Show.

Laverne & Shirley

Laverne & Shirley
Laverne & Shirley Henderson Productions

There are so many ways that Laverne & Shirley could be rebooted. They might not be as good as the original, but the original was so good that a reboot could be slightly worse and still be great.

Three’s Company

Three’s Company
Three’s Company NRW Productions

The premise of Three’s Company would need some retooling for modern audiences, but the concept of three roommates living together would work just as well today as it did in the ‘70s and ‘80s. Someone needs to make this show happen again.

11 of 20

Taxi

Taxi
Taxi John Charles Walters Productions

There are so many sitcoms with premises that could work just as well today as they did when they originally aired. Taxi would be a great option for a modern reboot because the change in the taxicab industry thanks to rideshare services would offer an entirely new set of storylines.

12 of 20

The West Wing

The West Wing
The West Wing John Wells Productions

Political shows will always be relevant, but the past few administrations have given all sorts of new options for storylines and characters that could be explored. The West Wing would be a great show to reboot today.

House

House
House Heel and Toe Films

Unfortunately, House has officially become an old series. Fortunately, it’s still good. And it would be even more fortunate if someone were to reboot it with an equally brilliant and hilariously mean doctor.

The Brady Bunch

The Brady Bunch
The Brady Bunch Redwood Productions

The Brady Bunch could be even more relatable to today’s audiences than it was when it originally aired. Family structures are changing all the time. We could use another sitcom’s take on that part of life.

The Beverly Hillbillies

The Beverly Hillbillies
The Beverly Hillbillies Filmways

A reboot of The Beverly Hillbillies that leans less into stereotypes and has a different name would make great TV. Watching cultures collide is always fascinating.

The Mod Squad

The Mod Squad
The Mod Squad Thomas-Spelling Productions

The Mod Squad was fun in its original form, but it could become even more intriguing thanks to the technology that modern characters would have access to. Plus, people love a good crime drama.

17 of 20

Weeds

Weeds
Weeds Tilted Productions

Weeds isn’t that old of a series (though since we considered House old, we should probably consider Weeds old, too), but drug use in suburban America has changed mightily since the series first aired. Now would be a great time for a reboot of this show.

18 of 20

Entourage

Entourage
Entourage Leverage Entertainment

The concept of Entourage will always be relevant in Hollywood. And since the show stopped airing, plenty of new issues in Tinsel Town have arisen, so there’d be lots of new fodder for the show to discuss.

Hey Arnold!

Hey Arnold!
Hey Arnold! Snee-Oosh, Inc.

Hey Arnold! was such a well-done cartoon, and we need more animated options for adolescents. This is a reboot we’d love to see happen.

The Wild Thornberrys

The Wild Thornberrys
The Wild Thornberrys Klasky Csupo

A show about a family that travels the world with a kid who can talk to animals? How did The Wild Thornberrys ever get canceled? This series needs a reboot stat.
