Courteney Cox directed Brandi Carlile's new 'Right On Time' video

Brandi Carlile is coming, and Courteney Cox is right behind her.

Carlile shared the music video for "Right On Time" on Wednesday morning (July 21), which was directed by Cox.

As explained by Entertainment Weekly, the two first met—"met"—when Carlile saw Cox's cover of "The Joke" on Instagram in February 2020. Carlile DM'd the Friends icon, and a mutual respect blossomed into a collaborative friendship and several jam sessions—they finally played "The Joke" together—all of which made Cox a perfect candidate to direct "Right On Time."

"All I know is they were still looking for a director for the video, and I thought, 'Well, I direct, why am I not pitching myself for this?'" Cox told EW. "I didn't want to be given it. I wanted to see if my idea was something that Brandi responded to. I was driving in the car as I do too much, and I thought of this idea because the song reminded me of something that I felt and then I pitched it to them."

Carlile added: "The idea was so cinematic to me. I had never told Courteney what the song was about because I felt protective over it or maybe it was too abstract in some way. But her idea was so spiritually connected to what the song is about. It wasn't on the nose; it was better than that. As soon as I heard what she wanted to do, I was like, 'That is it, that's the video.'"

"The Joke" was the lead single of Carlile's sixth studio album By the Way, I Forgive You, and both the song and album were darlings at the 61st Grammy Awards in 2018. (The 40-year-old is a six-time Grammy winner.)

Carlile likened "Right On Time" to "The Joke" when announcing it last Friday (July 16):

Carlile also revealed to EW that Cox "literally acted it out" when pitching the video.

"I was thinking about how we feel we have a certain persona and then we have roadblocks, and it's so often in our minds. I can talk myself into so many different things," Cox said of the concept. "I have my own roadblocks in so many areas of my life. I get nervous if I play the piano. Am I good enough? I do that to myself and then the more I just relax … it's amazing what you can do."

In the video, Carlile finishes playing to a packed crowd before solemnly wandering backstage. She sees her fans happily exiting the venue but finds she's trapped behind a glass wall. Eventually, she's able to get outside, only to be met by fire. Then she's underwater, but always by herself.

Prior to this music video, Cox had four directing credits to her name that included 12 episodes of her television series Cougar Town (h/t IMDb).
"Right On Time" is the lead single for her upcoming album In These Silent Days, due Oct. 1.
