CREATURE COMMANDOS Episode 5 Introduced Us To the Clayface of the DCU
Clayface fights Rick Flag in Creature Commandos. DC Studios

Eventually, Batman will make his live-action debut in the DCU, probably in the film Brave and the Bold. But one of his most well-known villains just made his DCU debut in Creature Commandos episode 5, “The Iron Pot,” which introduced us to Clayface. The comics have had several shape-shifting villains named Clayface, with the original, Basil Karlo, first appearing in Detective Comics #40 in 1940, only a year after Batman’s debut. Recently, DC Studios announced a Clayface film, written by horror maestro Mike Flanagan. But is the Clayface from this upcoming film the same one from Creature Commandos? Quite possibly, but it could just as easily be one of the many other Clayfaces. And there have been many, eight in total.

Clayface in Creature Commandos

In Creature Commandos, Task Force M’s head honcho Amanda Waller receives professional advice from an expert in Themyscira named Professor MacPherson. She convinces them that Circe’s proclamations of Princess Ilana’s plans to conquer the world are, in fact, all true. But in episode five, Rick Flag and Eric Frankenstein discover that the professor is actually Clayface in disguise. Flag recognizes Clayface as a known super villain. The pair gets into a huge fight with Clayface (voiced by Alan Tudyk, who also voices him on Harley Quinn). This fight leaves Clayface (and Flag) a little worse for wear. The episode never actually reveals which version of Clayface they fought, leaving many possibilities.

The Many Clayfaces of DC Comics

The first Clayface in the pages of DC Comics was Basil Karlo. He was a Hollywood actor who used the name of his horror film character and became a serial killer. In the sci-fi Silver Age of the ’60s, DC introduced another Clayface as a Batman foe, Matt Hagen. He was a treasure hunter who gained shapeshifting abilities from a radioactive pool. A third Clayface, Preston Payne, later appeared in the Bronze Age, in a 1978 issue of Detective Comics. He gained his powers by using the DNA of Hagen.

A variety of other characters with similar powers all used the name and look of Clayface since, although mostly for brief periods. Among them were Cassius “Clay” Payne, Peter Malley, Todd Russell, and Sondra Fuller, the only female Clayface. Their powers all differed somewhat, but almost all of them could only change into something (or someone) else for brief periods. They almost always reverted to a muddy, clay being as their default form. The character gained the most fame when they combined Basil Karlo with Matt Hagen for the seminal Batman: The Animated Series in 1992.

Batman: The Animated Series Introduced the Most Iconic Clayface

In the B:TAS episode “Feat of Clay,” the series producers reimagined Matt Hagen as a Hollywood actor, not an adventurer, much like Basil Karlo. However, his power set was definitely like Hagen’s in the comics. He turned into a hulking blob of clay, and that visualization is what the comics eventually adopted. Various media since Batman: The Animated Series has used different people using the name Clayface. However, the look they invented for the character has stuck around, from Batman: Brave and the Bold to Harley Quinn. Only the recent Batman: Caped Crusader went back to the original Basil Karlo iteration for their period piece series.

Creature Commandos‘ Clayface Hints Toward His DCU Future

Clayface as he appears in modern DC Comics. DC Comics

So who is the Clayface we meet in Creature Commandos? He’s definitely visually inspired by the Matt Hagen version from B:TAS. But they never say his civilian name, likely on purpose. He could be Hagen, Karlo, or even one of the less famous ones. He’s possibly Johnny Williams, the former firefighter Clayface of the early 2000s. He was a little more crass, like the Clayface in Creature Commandos. It’s impossible to say for certainty if this is the one who will star in a solo film. This version is a cold-blooded murderer, not a tragic figure. However, if “it’s all connected” in this new DCU, even if they are not the same literal person, his appearance is likely giving us our first look into what the live-action DCU Clayface looks like. We’re just excited to see what the future of this iconic villain is in the DCU.

Maple Leafs get unfortunate news about acquiring Flames veteran

The Toronto Maple Leafs continue to explore ways to upgrade the roster following Mitch Marner's departure in free agency. The Leafs front office has been trying to fill in the gaps along the roster, and they have been searching on the trade front. One name that has been heavily connected to the Maple Leafs in recent weeks is Calgary Flames star Nazem Kadri. Kadri could replace Marner very well in the lineup, but it seems that a deal could be complicated to complete. According to NHL insider Nick Kypreos of SportsNet, Toronto has tried to land Kadri multiple times this summer, only to be rebuffed each time. Kypreos believes that a deal involving Kadri returning to the Maple Leafs could be unlikely at this point in the summer. Last season, Kadri posted 35 goals and 32 assists for the Flames. His presence has been steady on the ice for years, and Calgary could probably get a lot on the trade market for him. The Maple Leafs will likely continue to explore ways to pry Kadri from the Flames. But Calgary likely won't trade him unless it receives an offer that it deems too good to be true. But Kadri is the leader of this team, and he was the best player for them last season. Toronto doesn't have a lot of tradable assets to work with, which could be what is holding things up between the two sides. The veteran could give Toronto a nice boost, but unless the Maple Leafs up the offer, he isn't returning to town.

MLB Insider Makes Brutal Yankees Prediction

New York Yankees fans know all too well how long it's been since the club last won a World Series title. If general manager Brian Cashman doesn't successfully wheel and deal ahead of the July 31 MLB trade deadline, it's entirely the title drought will continue in the Bronx. And that's not even the worst of it. "The Yankees, even without ace Gerrit Cole, were comfortably cruising along towards another AL East title when the wheels came off, and they have less than two weeks to see if they can find the right mechanic to get them rolling again," USA Today's Bob Nightengale reported Sunday. "This is a team that had a seven-game lead in late May, were 17 games over .500 in mid-June, but then were swept by the Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Angels, and still haven’t been the same, losing 19 times in the last 30 games," Nightengale continued. "They are desperate to find a third baseman and another starter in the next 12 days. If they come up empty, they may have trouble just slipping into the postseason," Nightendale concluded. "Sitting home in October would be nothing short of disastrous," Nightengale added for emphasis. The Yankees last missed the playoffs two years ago before returning to the World Series last fall. In seeking its first title since 2009, New York lost the 2024 Fall Classic to the Los Angeles Dodgers in five games. This year, the Yankees have a 42% chance of winning the American League East, according to FanGraphs. New York has a 49.4% chance of winning an AL wild card, giving them a 91.4% chance overall of reaching the playoffs. The Yankees have a 10% chance of winning the World Series, which is tied with the Detroit Tigers for the best odds in the American League. The Dodgers remain the overall World Series favorites with a 20.8% chance of winning another title. Brewers' Jacob Misiorowski continues to set radar gun on fire at unprecedented rate

Milwaukee Brewers Jacob Misiorowski was back on the mound on Tuesday night against the Seattle Mariners, and even though he pitched just 3.2 innings, he continued to show why he is one of baseball's most exciting young talents. Prior to be pulled after 64 pitches, he allowed just three hits, walked one and struck out seven to continue his stunning start to his big league career. He also continued to light up the radar gun in a way that no other pitcher in the modern era has. Following Tuesday's start, where he regularly clocked in at over 101 mph, he has now thrown 39 pitches this season that have eclipsed 101 mph on the radar gun. He has done that in just 29.1 innings over six starts. By comparison, every other starting pitcher in Major League Baseball has tallied just 17 pitches of 101 mph or higher — combined. But it's not just about how he stacks up with pitchers this season that is staggering. It's that he is near the top of the list for 101 mph pitches for a career. Here are two of his 101 mph heaters from Tuesday. The ball just erupts out of his hand at the hitters. When you add in his mid-90s change-up and high-90s breaking pitches he is already one of the nastiest pitchers in the majors. It is that sort of electric stuff that made him a National League All-Star after just five appearances. For the season, he has now struck out 40 batters in 29.1 innings of work (that is 12.27 per nine innings), allowed only 15 hits and just eight earned runs. And five of those earned runs against came in only one start. Given his age and with the way teams today are extremely protective of their pitchers, he is probably going to see his pitch counts and innings closely monitored this season. When he is on the mound, though, he is quickly becoming appointment viewing.

Steelers' Ben Roethlisberger's Bold Prediction Sets Steeler Nation On Fire For 2025 NFL Season

The Pittsburgh Steelers have some interesting expectations for the 2025 NFL season. After many fans were hopeful that the team would commit to a rebuild and begin preparing for the future, General Manager Omar Khan did the impossible. He orchestrated an impressive offseason that not only laid the foundation for long-term success, but also made the roster significantly better in the short-term. Khan’s approach brought in experienced veterans, addressed major roster holes, and added young talent through the draft. While the Steelers have certainly set themselves up for the future, this team is built to win right now. The biggest question mark remains Aaron Rodgers. At 41 years old, his ability to stay healthy and perform at a high level will be the ultimate factor in how far this team can go. On his podcast Footbahlin, Steelers legend Ben Roethlisberger shared a surprising and bold take. He believes the 2025 season is 'Super Bowl or bust' for Pittsburgh. Citing the strength of the roster and the urgency created by Rodgers’ limited window, Roethlisberger’s comments have fired up Steeler Nation and added even more intensity to an already pressure-filled season. "I anticipate big things this year..." Roethlisberger said on Tuesday's episode. "When Coach Tomlin built this team, there was no way that they're saying that .500, that's not even on the table right now. This team right now is built, what Coach Tomlin has built, is a Super Bowl or bust team, in my opinion." Roethlisberger didn’t hold back, and while he didn’t want to add unfair pressure, he made one thing clear. In his eyes, this roster can win a Super Bowl in 2025. The pressure is on for the Steelers to deliver, but at the very least, Mike Tomlin must win a playoff game this season. If he doesn’t, the fan base is likely to go crazy and continue their calling for his termination. "I don't want to sit there and say that anything short of that is a failed season," Roethlisberger said. "Because that seems like that's unfair pressure, but it also feels like that's what they've built for. And so it's not about just getting to the playoffs. And it's not even just winning a playoff game. That's a step up and that's great, but that can't be what is the final goal of this team. It can't be that. This team is built right now to go to a Super Bowl and to win a Super Bowl. And so it needs to happen." Tomlin has remarkably never had a losing season in his 18 years as the Steelers' head coach. That is an incredible accomplishment, especially in a league built for parity. However, even with that level of consistency, it is hard to ignore the glaring issue. Tomlin has not won a playoff game in nearly a decade. That is a shocking reality for a franchise that is used to deep postseason runs and competing for Super Bowls. For many fans, that kind of drought is simply not acceptable. Steelers Are 110% Capable Of Winning The Super Bowl In The 2025 NFL Season Tomlin’s last playoff win came during the 2016 season, and that needs to change as soon as possible. That is part of the reason the Steelers went all in this offseason. They did not just make a few tweaks to the roster. They made bold and aggressive moves in an effort to break through. The addition of Rodgers and the focus on building a complete, veteran-ready team showed that Pittsburgh is tired of falling short when it matters most. While every season can be viewed as Super Bowl or bust, hearing Roethlisberger say it out loud adds weight to that belief. He has no reason to sugarcoat anything, and if he believes the Steelers are capable of winning it all, fans have every reason to feel excited. The expectations are sky-high and the pressure is real.
