'Daredevil: Born Again' kills off a major character in premiere episode

When Netflix cancelled Daredevil in 2018, fans were devastated and rallied behind the series, doing everything they could to save it. Skip to March 2025 and we're back with Daredevil: Born Again on Disney+. However, the opening of the show's premiere episode brought some real heartbreak for longtime fans by killing off a beloved character.

Beware major spoilers ahead.

We only had a few moments to enjoy seeing Matt Murdock, Karen Page, and Foggy Nelson back on our screens together before losing one of them. Benjamin "Dex" Poindexter shoots Foggy (Elden Henson) in the chest, which does kill him as Matt, who is fighting the villain, listens to his friend's fading heartbeat. This is enough for him to throw Bullseye off the roof, and though the murderer does survive, Matt's intentions to kill him were clear.

However, in an interview with GamesRadar, EP Sana Amanat said that the character is "not gone forever."

Showrunner David Scardapane: Listen, he's not gone forever. That's all I can say - it's not the last thing you're gonna see of him. So, I understand. We also understand the heartbreak, and we did not take this lightly. I get upset. We were upset on the day, we were upset watching it. All of these things are true.

Deborah Ann Woll, who plays Karen and has confirmed her return for season 2, explained how hard the loss was to tell. "For actors, we lose on two levels: We lose the character that we love watching and we don't get to work with that actor again necessarily," the actress expressed to Entertainment Weekly. "This isn't going to be a moment that is easily cast off for the sake of a plot point. This is something that these characters are going to grapple with heavily for a long time, especially for me. He dies in my arms. That is something you will never forget for the rest of your life."

Charlie Cox: It’s devastating on a personal level and for the characters. I always think about Foggy Nelson as being kind of the heartbeat of the MCU. We lose a lot.

As for Cox, who stars as Daredevil, he actually came up with the idea for Matt to hear Foggy's heartbeat during the fight sequence. "Charlie came in and was like, 'What if I can hear his heartbeat the entire time?'" Scarpane told Variety. "'Done' — I went back home, and busted that out, because that was a brilliant idea."

Daredevil: Born Again's first season will have a total of 9 episodes.
