David Arquette thanks 'Scream' director for introducing him to Courteney Cox: 'I got a baby out of it'

It would seem that the center of a love story is the last place "Scream" belongs, but such was the case for David Arquette and Courteney Cox.

The now-exes first met while filming the 1996 horror film, directed by Wes Craven. Arquette played Dewey Riley. Cox starred as reporter Gale Weathers. Both reprised their roles for "Scream 2" ('97), "Scream 3" (2000), "Scream 4" ('11), and the forthcoming fifth installment titled "Scream."

Apparently, Arquette's Dewey wasn't supposed to make it out of the original movie alive.

"Wes Craven was sweet enough to say, 'Well, David, we're gonna put you in a gurney. We'll roll you out, and we'll see if you make it or not," Arquette, 50, explained on "Late Night with Seth Meyers." "And then the second time we did it, he said, 'OK, this time, just give a little thumbs-up. I don't know if I'll use it or not.' But thank God for Wes Craven, 'cause I got a baby out of it. I mean, not Wes Craven — thank Courteney Cox."

Arquette and Cox married in June 1999 and announced their separation in October 2010 before Arquette formally filed for divorce from the "Friends" icon in June 2012. They share a 17-year-old daughter, Coco.
Directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the new "Scream" is expected Jan. 14, 2022. Watch the trailer below.
