"Big Little Lies" was pretty early to the "Let's make a splash by getting some proper movie stars for your TV show." The first season, backed in 2017, was notable because of Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon, and it got a lot of traction with audiences on HBO. Then, "Big Little Lies" doubled down by adding Meryl Streep for season two. This was before she was on "Only Murders in the Building" and Streep doing television became de rigeur. That was 2019, so does the time that has elapsed since then mean "Big Little Lies" is done? Maybe not, and creator David E. Kelley is certainly still interested.
Speaking recently about a third season, Kelley said, "We had a great time doing the first two seasons and we all want to do it again. I’m hopeful it’ll happen." Of course, one might assume that the issue with a third season of the show would lie in the big-name cast. We didn't even mention Laura Dern or Zoe Kravitz, who are both in demand themselves. However, it seems like the key pieces are all interested.
In fact, in 2024 Kidman and Witherspoon, also executive producers, have spoken about wanting to do it, even planning to do it. It does seem like there isn't anything substantive standing in the way of a third season of "Big Little Lies," so Kelley's hopefulness appears merited. Of course, until it is announced, it remains a likely prospect, but far from certain.
