"Deadpool 2" director David Leitch to direct Netflix's "Gears of War" movie

Video game adaptations continue apace, and Netflix is bringing the "Gears of War" franchise to the streaming service. The popular sci-fi shoot-'em-up series is about humanity fighting off extinction at the hands of the Locust, a species of subterranean reptilian humanoids. Humanity's resistance is led by Delta Squad, in turn led by the game's main character Marcus Fenix. One presumes the film will focus on Fenix and Delta Squad, but what we do know now is who is directing the movie: David Leitch.

Leitch has become one of the most famous, perhaps the most famous, stunt coordinator, and he is credited as being one of the primary drivers of the Oscars finally introducing a stunt award. However, he's moved beyond just coordinating stunts to directing films. Films filled with stunts. Leitch has jumped into franchises to direct "Deadpool 2" and "Hobbs & Shaw." Recently, he also directed "Bullet Train" and the ode to stunt performers that is "The Fall Guy."

In addition to Leitch as director, the "Gears of War" movie has Jon Spaihts on board to write the script. He has writing credit on "Prometheus" and both of Denis Villenueve's "Dune" movies. Those are certainly projects with similarities to "Gears of War."

All told, Netflix certainly has the chance to get a good sci-fi action movie out of "Gears of War" with this duo. Leitch's track record is spotty, but all of his films have good action set pieces, and "The Fall Guy" was good. Before "Gears of War," though, Leitch is directing "How to Rob a Bank," which comes out September of 2026.
