James Gunn has said in the recent past that he’d be up for an MCU/DCU crossover, but something like that is still years and years away. However, when speaking to the press recently in a post-Peacemaker finale event, he was asked about what dropped ideas he had for different worlds ARGUS visited in the Quantum Unfolding Chamber. And shockingly, one of those worlds would have involved a cameo from none other than Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool. The first crossover between universes would have been with both respective companies’ most R-rated properties, and not something like “Superman meets Spider-Man.” Here’s what Gunn had to say about the crossover event that almost was:
I wanted them to open the door and see Deadpool in a room. I talked to Ryan Reynolds about it. But I would’ve had to go through some pretty, pretty big hoops to do that. He wanted to do it! Oh, that’s all anybody’s gonna talk about now, is f------ Deadpool in the other room. I should’ve never said it.
If this cameo had occurred, chances are the collective minds of nerdom would have exploded into a million tiny pieces. But it’s also the only thing anyone would be talking about in terms of the finale. Forget the setup for the DCU’s future, or any of the emotional beats for the characters. The discourse would have simply been about the first live-action Marvel and DC crossover. So, maybe it’s for the best that it didn’t happen. Besides, we’d want to see Wade and Chris actually interact, as the two potty-mouthed mascots of their comic book publishers. And that wouldn’t have likely happened in a cameo with ARGUS agents opening different doorways. Ultimately, when a Marvel/DC Comics crossover eventually happens, and it will, it will require a lot more lawyers and we’ll all know about it way in advance.
