Robert Eggers has started working on a new werewolf horror movie called Werwulf. The suspense master behind The Lighthouse and Nosferatu is brainstorming once again with Icelander co-writer Sjón. And once again, William DeFoe will be joining the team for this next horrifying and suspenseful feature set to hunt us down in Christmas of 2026.

About Werwulf (2026) So Far

Deep in the forest rests a legendary beast that has wreaked havoc throughout the centuries, tending the line between human and beast. Werewolves have been stalking through history, and with horror cinema, they have evolved throughout the years. Robert Eggers’ dip into the werewolf genre will introduce a unique spin on the timeless creature.

With the given title, Eggers must be planning on setting this wolf tale deep into the past when the word “werwulf” was the common way of spelling this beast’s name in literature. If it is anything similar to his debut film, The Witch, we can expect historical influence and meticulous research to permeate this film, both inside and out. That being said, Eggers could take into consideration historic accounts and incidents involving the folkloric beast, such as The Beast of Gevaudan, The Account of Gerald of Wales, or Otia Imperialia of Gervase.

William DeFoe Crying Wolf

The story is still in development, but it has been circulating through the grapevine that the director’s muse, William DeFoe, will be joining the project in an unknown role for this medieval movie. DeFoe has been collaborating with Eggers since The Lighthouse in 2019, with Werwulf set to be marked as the fourth feature film with Eggers. With all three talented individuals pooling together for this project, funded by Focus Features, we can expect another supernatural and intense period piece.
