The Hulu app won't be around too much longer, but the service will live on, Disney announced Wednesday.
Disney will be "fully integrating" Hulu into its Disney+ service, the company revealed at its quarterly earnings meetings. The "unified" app will roll out in 2026.
Hulu will exist as a tile on Disney+, similar to how Pixar, Star Wars and others do currently. Beginning this fall, it will also replace the Star tile on Disney+ internationally after previously being a U.S.-only app.
“Today we are announcing a major step forward in strengthening our streaming offering by fully integrating Hulu into Disney+,” CEO Bob Iger and CFO Hugh Johnston said, via Variety. “This will create an impressive package of entertainment, pairing the highest-caliber brands and franchises, great general entertainment, family programming, news and industry-leading live sports content in a single app.”
Today's news isn't a surprise, as Disney has been working on absorbing Hulu into Disney+ for some time. In June, the media behemoth completed an agreement with Comcast to buy out NBCUniversal‘s one-third stake in Hulu.
Additionally, in 2024, Disney began integrating Hulu content on Disney+. Now, all that's left is the full merger.
“Work is already underway to continue enhancing our technology, and over the coming months, we will be implementing numerous improvements within the Disney+ app, including exciting new features and a more personalized homepage,” Disney said Wednesday, via Deadline. “All of this work will culminate with the unified Disney+ and Hulu streaming app experience that will be available to consumers next year."
In addition to today's Hulu/Disney+ announcement, Disney also shared that it will no longer reporting streaming subscriber numbers for Disney+, Hulu and ESPN.
Also, the launching of the official ESPN stand-alone app, which will cost $29.99 a month, will take place on August 21.
