Everyone who has ever rode “it’s a small world” at Disneyland or Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom walked away knowing the lyrics to the iconic attraction’s song. How could they not after hearing them again and again….and again and again….and again? But soon every guest will have a new section of that earworm to learn. Both Disney parks will soon add an original verse to the final scene of “it’s a small world,” changing the songs. Disney legend Richard Sherman—who co-wrote the original song with his brother Roger for the 1964 World’s Fair—penned this new “it’s a small world” section shortly before he passed away.
The mouse house has announced a big change starting on July 17. That’s when both Disneyland and Walt Disney World will make a new addition to the finale of “it’s a small world.” The ride will now play a new verse of the “it’s a small world” song that Richard Sherman wrote before his death in May 2024. Richard’s son Gregg Sherman said the new verse is intended to “celebrate that there’s more that unites us than divides us, and reinforce the message of that song.”
The signature music will remain the same in that scene. But these are the new lyrics guests will now hear at the ride’s conclusion:
Mother earth unites us in heart and mind
And the love we give makes us humankind
Through our vast wondrous land
When we stand hand in hand
It’s a small world after all.
Disney is also celebrating this new addition to the song and its legendary composers with a special edition “it’s a small world” (70th Anniversary) vinyl. Fans can pre-order theirs now or get it at the Disney Music Emporium when it arrives on July 18, 2025. You’ll also be able to listen to the updated “It’s A Small World” song on digital platforms.
How many times will you need to hear this version to have these new lyrics ingrained into your mind forever? Based on past experiences, not many. The “it’s a small world” song already owns a big plot of land in our ears.
