Donald Glover admits he invited himself to the cast of the upcoming “Super Mario Galaxy Movie,” set to come to theaters on April 1, 2026. Set to expand on the 2023 release, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” with the character roster as it goes beyond the brothers Mario and Luigi’s smaller ensemble with Princess Peach, Toad, Donkey Kong, and Bowser.
The newest Nintendo movie is expected to expand and go further than the simple lives of the brothers, voiced by Chris Pratt for Mario and Charlie Day for Luigi. We will still see Anya Taylor-Joy voicing Peach, Bowser voiced by Jack Black, and Keegan-Michael Key will be returning as Toad, too. No one could forget Bowser’s advisor and servant, Kamek, who Kevin Michael Richardson lends his voice to, who fails to deliver Princess Peach into the King of the Koopas arms.
The audience will get a treat in the upcoming Nintendo movie as we explore Princess Rosalina, voiced by Brie Larson. Bowser’s son will make an appearance, with Benny Safdie bringing Bowser Jr. to life. Everyone’s favorite mercenary, Fox McCloud, will be brought to the Mario world by Glen Powell’s voice, and Honey Queen makes her big debut, voiced by Issa Rae. One of the final characters, though, surprisingly, is Yoshi the dinosaur, voiced by Donald Glover, who has played a major role in the original games as the faithful mount.
According to ScreenRant, they sat down for an interview with Black (Bowser) and the new star, Glover, about the sequel set to release soon. In the interview, Glover disclosed how he achieved snatching the role of Yoshi, a fan favorite Super Mario Bro. dinosaur. While Yoshi didn’t appear in the first movie, Glover seems excited about bringing him onto the silver screen and into the movie’s universe on April 1, 2026.
Despite Black jokingly saying that it isn’t cool to invite yourself to the party, Glover seems unashamed to admit he directly reached out to Pratt, who plays Mario, to be Yoshi, adding that he can bring the traditional character justice. Black humorously says how he’d wondered who brought Glover on, only to realize he’d nominated himself.
“Also, as a director or a producer, when you know that someone wants to do the role, that’s a big plus. Anyone out there who wants to get in on the ground floor of the industry, put yourself out there. Let them know how much you want it.”
- Jack Black
It would seem that Black and Glover agree that if you want something, go for it and put yourself out there. It has obviously worked for Glover, who is now going to be another voice alongside the rest of the cast to save the galaxy from Bowser Jr. trying to free his father.

The man has many hats he wears, as he is also a comedian, writer, producer, and director. For a time, he had an alternate name, Childish Gambino, which he retired in 2024 when he released his last music album, “Bando Stone & The New World.” He also contributed to the writing of “30 Rock” after being approached by Tina Fey when she saw his short videos Glover had made while attending an improv comedy group in college at New Your’s Tisch School of the Arts.
He was attributed to the creation of beloved Spider-Man, Miles Morales, when he went to Twitter to campaign for himself to play Spider-Man in a live-action role. In the pitch on social media, he was wearing Spidey pajamas in the second season of his NBC comedy, “Community.” This sparked a #Donald4SpiderMan campaign to bring others to see what could happen. While Glover may not have gotten the role of Miles Morales, comic-writer Brian Bendis had seen and thought it was a natural fit for what he was writing at the time, and made him Miles’ uncle, Aaron Davis, in “Spider-Man: Homecoming.”
