Donnie Wahlberg teases the "next chapter in the Blue Bloods legacy" with 'Boston Blue'

Blue Bloods fans were absolutely devastated when the CBS series was cancelled after 14 seasons, however, Donnie Wahlberg will be continuing the legacy this fall with Boston Blue. The new drama received a straight-to-series order for the 2025-2026 broadcast season, and Wahlberg will also serve as an executive producer.

In BOSTON BLUE, a universe expansion of the long-running top drama BLUE BLOODS, Wahlberg will reprise his role as NYPD officer Danny Reagan as he takes a position with Boston PD. Once in Boston, he is paired with detective Lena Peters, the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family.

Along with Wahlberg, the cast of Blue Bloods included Tom Selleck, Bridget Moynahan, Will Estes, Len Cariou, Marisa Ramirez, and Vanessa Ray. Considering that all of the Reagan family and Danny's partner Maria Baez were still alive by the end of the show, it would make sense for Boston Blue to have some cameos.

The only issue is that it will be set in Boston rather than New York, which will make it harder for them to pop in.

On Instagram, the actor shared a little teaser with the caption, "So excited to carry on the tradition, to share so many surprises, to answer some unanswered questions and to welcome all of you — to #BostonBlue! The next chapter in the #BlueBloods legacy begins. I can’t wait. See you CBS fall!"

All of the Blue Bloods cast were outspoken about their love for the show and their desire for it to continue, none of them ready to say goodbye.

"I can’t figure out why they didn’t start streaming it, do 10 episodes a year. But I’m not the boss. Everybody wanted to come back. And I think with this cast, it would have been a gift for the audience," Selleck said to Variety. "I don’t make those decisions. I’m prepared to celebrate and commemorate this show, but I’m still getting used to it."

While talking about his TV dad, Wahlberg pointed out how "from day one, fought for the integrity of the show," explaining, "The show could have gone in multiple directions after it was picked up, and Tom was like, 'Listen. It’s about family first.' They had this big set design with a computer, and Tom was going to stand in front of the computer and overlord over New York. And he was like, 'That’s ridiculous!'"

Blue Bloods came to an end on December 13, 2024.
