It's been, effectively, a decade since the final season of "Downton Abbey." The show was an unexpected hit, maybe even a phenomenon, in the United States. People enjoyed watching these rich British people doing their thing at their palatial estate. Well, the PBS types do enjoy British content, and "The White Lotus" is the latest example of people loving to watch the idle rich, so maybe it all makes sense.
Since the show ended, though, "Downton Abbey" has lived on in films. The first came in 2019 with "A New Era" arriving in 2022. Now, though, it all comes to an end. It's time for "Downton Abbey: The Final Reckoning." Wait, wrong franchise. "Downey Abbey: The Grand Finale."
The Crawley family (and, you know, all the people who work for them) are heading into the 1930s. We can only assume this will be like in "Boogie Nights" when it becomes 1980 and everything goes to hell? Or maybe not!
By this point, this one may just be for the "Downton Abbey" diehards. After all, and again, it's been a decade since the show ended. The first movie was a legit hit back in 2019, making almost $200 million off of a budget of roughly $15 million. That gave the studio a bit of confidence, perhaps even hubris, and "A New Era" cost $40 million and only yielded $92.7 million. That was 2022, though, the year "Top Gun: Maverick" saved movie theaters. Joking aside, at that time people were really just going to see the biggest, blockbustingest movies in theaters. Things are a bit better now.
The fact that this is "The Grand Finale" will likely garner more interest as well, of course. Maybe you'll watch this trailer and get an itch to revisit the world of "Downton Abbey" after dipping out a decade ago. You have until September 12 to sort that out.
