‘Dutton Ranch’: Carter & Oreana’s Relationship Explained by Stars

Carter’s (Finn Little) life changed forever when he met Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) in Yellowstone. They took the kid in as their own after his unsafe childhood led him into their lives. He’s a lot like Rip in that regard, and now, he’s coming into his own in Dutton Ranch and finding his first love. Little and his costar, Natalie Alyn Lind, explained Carter and Oreana’s connection to TV Insider. Little says that Carter’s adoptive parents’ relationship has greatly influenced his idea of love. Warning: Dutton Ranch Episode 3 spoilers ahead!

Carter is 19 but never finished high school, so Beth and Rip are making him finish school in their new hometown of Rio Paloma, Texas. Carter met Oreana at the rodeo after a girl from school tricked him into buying beers for her and her friends and then ditched him. He first saw her in a fight with a rodeo star she was dating. When the cowboy got too rowdy, Carter tackled him and ended up arrested. Oreana bailed him out as a thank you.

They crossed paths again in Episode 3, after Oreana reached her limits with the rough cowboy. Carter and Oreana hooked up at the end of the episode.

Little tells TV Insider that Beth and Rip’s passionate, committed relationship has inspired Carter to find something similar for his own life.

“They have absolutely guided him to her almost,” Little says. “Beth is very fiery and very strong, and Carter absolutely sees a little bit of that in Oreana, and I think that’s a big part of what attracts Carter to her.”

What does Oreana see in Carter?

“Oreana was raised in an unsteady household, and she’s always having to fight for love. With Carter, it’s something that comes very easily and she sees this authentic, genuine person within him,” Lind explains. “She can be herself around him, fully authentic. And I don’t think that’s something that she’s able to be very often. She always has people shaping her. I just think that she sees first — I mean, obviously, other things as well — but first of all, a really good friend.”

Carter and Oreana’s bond will strengthen throughout Dutton Ranch Season 1, and sparks will fly (for better and for worse) when Oreana meets Beth for the first time. Beth never liked it when her father, John Dutton (Kevin Costner), dated someone new in Yellowstone. How will she react when her son starts dating?
