Ed Sheeran is an immensely-successful musician. He's also not a master of subtlety or one to try and play three-dimensional chess creatively speaking. His litany of questionable tattoos include some thuddingly-literal representations. So, when we say he has a new song and music video tied to the release of "F1," it's definitely notable. When we say the song is called "Drive" and the video sees Sheeran at a Formula 1 track, it's not at all surprising.
"F1" is a movie about Formula 1 racing starring Brad Pitt and directed by Joseph Kosinski aka the "Top Gun: Maverick" guy. There's also, for some reason, "F1: The Album," which is being released alongside the movie, which hits theaters June 27. Also on the album you will find the likes of Doja Cat and Chris Stapleton.
Sheeran's "Drive" seems to be the centerpiece, though. Notably, the song also features John Mayer on guitar and David Grohl on drums. That's a lot of cache for a song for a racing movie.
As to the song, well, it's what one would expect for a song Sheeran trotted out for a movie as opposed to his own work. Of course, new Sheeran is exciting for a lot of people. And if it gets some of them to go see "F1" in theaters (if Brad Pitt isn't enough), so much the better for the studio.
