While promoting The Pickup , Eddie Murphy gave new updates regarding Shrek 5 and Donkey's upcoming solo project! Little is known about the fifth Shrek film except that it will star Mike Myers, Murphy, Cameron Diaz, and Zendaya, who is a new addition to the franchise.
"They're still doing voiceover stuff. We're still in the booth, and literally, we're still doing Shrek," the actor told ScreenRant. "We start in September on Donkey, we're doing a Donkey one, and that'll be three years from now, but we're about two years into Shrek 5. Still in the booth and about to start Donkey in September."
As for what fans can expect from Donkey's spin-off, he explained, "Donkey's going to be like how Puss in Boots had his own movie, Donkey's going to have his own movie, own little story with his dragon wife and his kids that are half-dragon and half-donkeys. They've written this funny story. We're doing that, starting that in September."
Shrek came out in 2001, starting the popular franchise and leading to Shrek 2, Shrek the Third, and Shrek Forever After. Puss in Boots got his spin-off in 2011, which was followed by a sequel, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. Considering Murphy's Donkey is such a beloved character and scene stealer, it was only a matter of time before he got the main character spotlight.
However, one character we won't see in the fifth movie is John Lithgow, who played Lord Farquaad. "I would have loved to, but it’s pretty hard to regenerate a character who’s been eaten by a dragon," he told Parade. "Do a prequel. Farquaad as a young man, but they would probably hire Ryan Gosling to do that."
Shrek 5 will be released in theaters on Christmas 2026.
