The late rapper Tupac Shakur’s family recently filed a new lawsuit in Shakur’s death for a wrongful death lawsuit. After 30 years, one of hip-hop’s greatest unsolved murders is adding another layer to the mystery. Currently, Duane “Keffe D” Davis is in custody and awaiting trial for the 1996 murder. But the “Dear Mama” artist’s stepbrother, Maurice Shakur, wants everyone involved in the murder and the planned conspiracy to murder his brother, including Davis, 100 unnamed suspects, and even Diddy, is mentioned.
In 1996, the music world mourned the loss of 2Pac and heard the story of how he died in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas. As soon as the news circulated, many did not buy the story that his death was related to gang violence, but retaliation in the music world.
In the wrongful death lawsuit Shakur filed Tuesday, April 28, he is facing off against Davis, and 100 Jon Doe, and Davis’ own words are the ammunition against them. According to Forbes Davis’ transcript from the Netflix documentary “Sean Combs: The Reckoning,” he confessed to the secret deal involving Bad Boy record label owner, as identified in the lawsuit.
The wrongful death lawsuit insists that with new evidence, the men in the white Cadillac are not the only individuals responsible for Shakur’s death, including a million-dollar bounty placed on him by music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs.
According to XXL Mag, the reasoning behind the new lawsuit is,”Mopreme claims in his new lawsuit that the defendants were involved in a “complex conspiracy to murder Tupac that involved much more than mere retaliation for a prior altercation.” The complex conspiracy is that the individual listed in the case is
responsible for “participating in planning, financing, directing, or carrying out the conspiracy” to kill Tupac, according to the Las Vegas review journal.
Arrested in 2023, Davis is the last person living who was a witness and present in the car for the 1996 drive-by shooting. Although Davis did not pull the trigger, he is charged with planning the original crime after an altercation between 2 Pac and his nephew.
According to XXL Mag, Davis is charged with “murder with use of a deadly weapon with the intent to promote, further or assist a criminal street gang in relation to Shakur’s killing on September 7, 1996, in Las Vegas.”

Anyone who has followed the “Poetic Justice” actor’s career and murder hearing, Diddy’s name popped up in the case is not a surprise. Outside of the theory that Shakur is alive and living in Cuba to escape fame, the other major theory is that Combs planned Shakur’s death as part of the ongoing West Coast-East Coast beef.
The beef between the two coasts, actually, the beef was between Bad Boy Records in New York and Death Row Records in California, began in the early 90’s. Despite tensions between the coasts, Shakur and rap artist Biggie Smalls were friends. But the friendship ended once Shakur was under the impression that Smalls had set him up to get shot and ambushed after a late-night studio session.
After that incident, 2 Pac and Death Row Records label leader Suge Knight took several shots at Diddy and Bad Boy artists before releasing the classic diss song “Hit ‘Em Up”. Shortly afterward, Notorious B.I.G released the diss track “Who Shot Ya?” but the threats went beyond songs and became violent.
The 1996 murder of Shakur did not stop the beef, but many blamed Diddy and Smalls for the act, leading to the death of the “Big Poppa” rapper a year later as revenge.
More information for the wrongful death lawsuit will be released closer to the trial date, including who the 100 unnamed individuals involved are. Davis’s next court date is scheduled for August 10 later this year. Hopefully, after three decades, music fans and the Shakur family will get justice and answers.
